Dieter3 Posted May 31, 2010 Share Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) So here it is! At long last. I've been waiting for the end of a year of data collection so I could analyze and post it. Doing this has been a valuable learning tool and I hope that the info is of some value to buyers and sellers alike. First - some of the things I've learned: SELLERS - Those of you that include lots of nice photos and good descriptions almost ALWAYS make more money on your sales than the sellers that do not give much attention to pics. or descriptions for items of essentially equivalent condition. Unless the item isn't worth much to begin with - don't be cheap and lazy (with all due respect )!! Put up those photos and lay out nice descriptions, and it'll pay off. BUYERS - There are a lot of good sellers out there, most of them seem honest. But it should go without saying, "Buyer Beware". Unfortunately, and this probably comes without surprise, there are some less than upfront deals out there. I'd wager the majority are on the up and up, but I've documented several instances of awards and documents being mated and sold as a pair when they most certainly were not. I will not rat out individual sellers, I do not want to make any enemies, and I'm certainly NOT saying that any of our known members have engaged in such a practice. What I am saying is that you should really get to know your sellers, build trust, and ask questions. If you don't feel right about something, then don't buy it! Probably the most "entertaining" thing I've seen is a seller that purchases items and then puts them up for sale BEFORE he/she even receives the item! AND recycles the pictures from one auction site to another! This seller consistently fetches lower prices than other, more dedicated sellers. Sheesh!! It goes without saying that observing so many items for sale has provided a huge education into the so many aspects surrounding these pieces, particularly when it comes to dating some of the orders (well, a general time frame anyway...), and how pieces evolved. MOVING FORWARD - With regards to the data - 1) The majority of these sales were from Yahoo! Japan Auctions, and eBay - the two major players. There were a handful of "miscellaneous" transactions from other sites, etc. In the future, I hope to expand the horizons. GUARANTEED - PLENTY of sales that I missed, but I'm guessing I found 90% or so. 2) All transactions were for primarily individual pieces, occasionally groups of the SAME item if they were of similar condition. 3) Groups of varying pieces were not included due to the difficulty in assigning a value to an individual piece. For the new year, I will include these, but only in a numerical sense to get a sense of actual numbers. So my numbers do NOT include actual observed totals. 4) My numbers represent total transactions, NOT individual, distinct awards - MANY of these are bought and resold, but have been counted as individual sales. I figure this has some value to frequency of a given item, how often it can be expected. 5) The data is extensive, probably somewhat confusing, but I hope I've made it understandable. I'm sure it will be refined in the future - and HAPPY to take suggestions for what is not valuable, or what might be valuable to add to the data collection. 6) I grade pieces on my own scale, I'm pretty hard on things. INOTH, my definitions of condition tend to be higher than that of the average seller. This is highly subjective of course!! But I've learned that what many may call "good", are to me really pieces of junk. I do not call things "Good for their age". They are either good or not - it's more about care and storage, than a numeric age - we've all seen old pieces that are really quote nice, and newer pieces that are in horrible condition. Yes - generally speaking, newer pieces seem to be nicer on the average but I do not factor this into my judgments - I'm mean. And judgments can only be as accurate as a seller's description combined with pictures. 7) I've tried to keep track of periods for orders, but it's simply too much to factor that into the data at this point, at least for me it is. It's hard enough keeping all this jazz straight! 8) Sorry, I only did this in U.S. Dollars and Japanese Yen and for the most part, factored these separately. 9) When I say BEST/WORST DEAL - I don't necessarily mean a deal was good or bad - it simply refers to equity based on average cost to an average condition. (Clearly a subjective component to this!) 10) Plenty I'm forgetting to mention. Bored yet?? MOVING ON If possible, please refrain from commenting here - simply to keep the data contiguous.
