Brian Wolfe Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Hello Everyone, I have a photo of Japanese sailor wearing his cap and medals. I would like to post this plus similar medals at a later time but for now I would like some help with the cap tally translation. I am assuming that the cap tally is the name of his ship in the same manner that the British Navy cap tallies has the name of the ship. Any assistance you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Regards Brian
Brian Wolfe Posted June 11, 2010 Author Posted June 11, 2010 That photo was not very large so I'll try it again.
Paul L Murphy Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Sorry to disappoint but they had a standard tally. It says Dainippon Teikoku Kaigun, which is Greater Japanese Empire Navy.

It is a little disappointing and if I had looked at others I might have come to this conclusion myself...eventually. I actually purchased the photo because he was wearing some of the medals I have in my collection and I always find it interesting to see them in wear. Thanks again. Regards Brian
Dieter3 Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 I actually purchased the photo because he was wearing some of the medals I have in my collection and I always find it interesting to see them in wear. Same here! Seems like sailor photos with medals are harder to find than soldiers. Let's see the rest of that pic.!:D
Brian Wolfe Posted June 12, 2010 Author Posted June 12, 2010 A closer view of the medals. I believe the Order of the Rising Sun is the 7th Class as you will notice that there seems to be a darker colour at the bottom 1/2 of the medal where the 8th Class would probably be one light colour throughout. The other medal is the China Incident 1937- 1945. It is similar to the Manchurian Incident, as you are aware, but the "attitude" of the bird matches the shape of the bird on the China Incident Medal. I'll post these two medals next for those reading this post who are not familiar with the medals I am talking about. Regards Brian
Brian Wolfe Posted June 12, 2010 Author Posted June 12, 2010 Here are the two medals in the photo. Please note these are NOT the exact medals in the photo only similar ones. Regards Brian
