Oberleutnant or Hauptmann ?

Simple question................... or not?

This is a officer of Füsilier Regiment Fürst Karl Anton von Hohenzollern (Hohenzollernsches) Nr.40 in Aachen

The question is :

is it a Oberleutnant or a Hauptmann - or am I completely wrong..... I can`t see any stars on the Epeaulette.....but for a special reason it should be a Oberleutnant or Hauptmann...

OK............. as we say in germany : Butter bei die Fische (butter to the fishes (something like : here is the complete truth ) )

The problem is that this photo is from Aachen , in Aachen is the IR40 , it is Hohenzollern regiment and he wears a Hohenzollern award , the next problem is that this photo is dated 1898 with a photographers date stamp...........

When you have a year and a unit and awards that fit the unit

BUT

in that year you don`t have any Leutnant with that award in the regiment ??? !!!!

NOW???

The only man in sight is Premier Lieutenant Bessel with HEK3 - but´then there must be one star on the epeaulett.....

Anyone any idea who this can be???

He does look older then a Leutnant - perhaps there is a pip on the epaulette and it is just too washed-out in the photography to see.

OK..........now let`s get back to the threads title.....

A Hauptmann you would see better , or? There must be 2 washed out pips.... because the only other candidate for the photo at the same time with the same award is a Hauptmann.............

I think I go for the Oberleutnant / Premier lieutenant with one not to see pip.... ;)
