Jock,

it certainly looks to be the goods. There is an illustration in the Men-At-Arms series British Cavalry Equipments 1800-1941 Figure E9 to confirm this.

There is another illustration in the corresponding Infantry book page 33, but it does have a different stopper, has an elongated neck and leather strips sewn to the fabric to secure the shoulder strap.
