Japanese Lieutenant Colonel

Gentlemen,

I received a picture of a Japanese lieutenant colonel. Can somebody read his name on the back side?

First kanji might be: "dai" or "oo"

Second kanji: ?

Third kanji: "naga" like in Nagasaki.

It is not his name, it is his position. It reads "Daitaicho" which means Battalion Commander. A "Daitai" was the unit which was between a company (Chutai) and a regiment (Rentai) in size. He has a nice rack of medals.

After knowing the reading, it's so easy to find out the right kanji...

What's the differences between Daidancho and Daitacho?

In the history class my teacher said that Daidancho is the term for Batalion commander and you said it's Daitacho, which one is the right pronounciation?..:unsure:

These characters are Daitaicho. The kanji for Dan is a different kanji than the one used here and has a generic meaning of "group". Daitai is the normal military expression for Battalion.

ow, thank you for your explanation, i found some Japanese terms in history books (during1942-1945 Japan occupied my country, Indonesia, so there are some chapters in history discussing about Japan)..

ow, and there's an information about old japanese bunker in bunker and fortification section, have you read it?
