valjean007 Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 i bought this painting years ago,,it is a early 19th century napoleon period oil painting painted on board, the painting it self has appoximately 12"wide and 16" lenth(not including frame),i am pretty sure this a high ranking general in napoleon's Grand Army, have legion of honer on his left chest.their is no artist's name on this oil,,also because of financial problem,i wanna sell it if anyone interest in it,,i want to sell it by 3800 USD. if any one knows the general's name or you want to buy it please contact me,i can sent more pictures to you ,my email address is napollington@yahoo.com
Odulf Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 (edited) This is not a French general, quite the opposite, it is the Dutch General of Infantry Jan Willem Janssens (1762-1838), first Chancellor and Grand-Cross of the Military Order of William (1815), but he was also decorated with the Grand-Cross of the French Legion of Honour. But it is a strange picture, because the sash of the Order should be worn over the right shoulder, so I suppose that the image was mirrored as the GC-LoH should be worn on the right breast instead otherwise. Odulf Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 The original picture was painted by the famous Dutch painter of portraits Pieneman, it is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (National Art Gallery). Janssens was Governor of the Dutch Cape Province (before the British "salvaged" the colony) and he was General of the Dutch Army in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). see also: http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/collectie/zoeken/asset.jsp?id=SK-A-2219&lang=nl
