Does anyone recognise the medal that this UK police officer is wearing? (Sorry cannot post larger - he is not wearing a helmet so sadly no clues there).

Might have received it if previously employed with Indian Police (I very much doubt a PC in uniform would wear masonic isnsignia).

    Hi Mervyn

I cannot load the whole image but I will gladly send the whole thing to you if you would like to e-mail me direct. The uniform worn by the subjcet of the photo certainly looks like a British policeman. Having been a collector for many years I am glad I am not the only one stumped by this medal.

    Best wishes

Does the officer's belt buckle provide any clues?

I'm not clued-up on medals but it does look like the kind of long service/good conduct medal that individual forces awarded before the Home Office "banned" them.

Nick - I enlarged the buckle - couldn't make out any details.

Neil - perhaps you could post it here - we can enlarge for ourselves - but, the more who can view the better. Mervyn

    Hi,

I wonder if it is a 'Humane Society' type of award, which I think he would have been entitled to wear? There is a similar one shown here - sold at Tennants Auctions - which is described as a Salford Humane Society medal (link below):

    Just a thought...

Owen - I think you have solved the mystery. Many thanks to all who have shared their thoughts. The quest now begins to find out who he was and what he did to be awarded the Salford Human Society Medal. Are there citations or a roll of recipients online or can they be found in a record office? The belt buckle will not enlarge from the original to be clear and legiable but what can be made out it could be Manchester Police, let me know your thoughts.

    Best wishes

Hi, a bit more googling has given up the following:

    http://www.specialis...php?photo_id=17

Have a look at the link...seems to be a forum where someone might be able to shed some light on your medal.

Also..might be worth getting in touch with the Greater Manchester Police Museum, which has archive material for Salford:

    http://www.gmp.polic...aboutaliens.pdf

The medal auction house Dix Noonan Webb describe the Salford Humane Society as follows - it also makes reference to the medal pictured above as being current from circa 1884: "The Humane Society for the Hundred of Salford was founded in 1789 and was revived in 1824 after being dormant for some years. The rather scarce 1st (circular) type was replaced c.1884 by the more common hollow cruciform type."

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks Mervyn, I agree...and when you do a super zoom on the medal and play with brightness/contrast etc (whilst still massively blurred) the similarities are quite convincing. I do like mysteries! Must be the (old) policeman in me...

Also, hope we hear back on who the bobby was...with a collar number and the award, there must be a fighting chance of pinning him down.

If I remember rightly - Salford is one of the old satellite towns that used to surround Manchester. Probably a suburb

now, but still worth contacting Manchester Police Museum. Mervyn

I will do just that and get back with a posting as soon as I hear back. Neil.

Good luck Neil, it would be great to put a name etc to this Bobbies face...

Hi Mervyn, Salford is a city ajoining Manchester. It had a police force from 1844 until 1968 when it combined with Manchester City police, The medal was introduced as a round one in 1824 changing to the cruciform type in aproc 1889 and was withdrawn in1922. Ian
