Jock Auld Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Guys,From today, it was pretty slim pickings today as it was raining. Can't make out the year I would assume it is 1945 but the last digit is not legible and it is a post war scrim net.
Tony Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Jock,Are you reading the date from the liner or the back of the helmet shell? You probably already know but in case you don't, the liner maker and date can sometimes be found stamped on the headband and the opposite side of the lining cross bands. Obviously the liner needs to be removed to be checked. Is the outside postwar painted or is it the original paint? Either way a nice find.Tony
Jock Auld Posted June 21, 2015 Author Posted June 21, 2015 Tony,No that is what is on the liner visible in the last picture. I shall strip it down later and see if it has some shell markings, The colour looks to me, as it was applied, on the inside it is still rough like something was added to it but still pale green. As you know the friendly forces are not really my bag. I will do some better pics and remove the new scrim.
Tony Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 I reckon friendly forces stuff is very much underrated and can still be scooped up for next to nothing compared to axis forces equipment, especially when you think of the short time period some of the uniforms/headgear were in use.Recently I was told that a rough paint finish inside helmets was used from about mid war onwards and often obscures any markings stamped inside.
