PAINTED?! - 1914-15 War Medal

Hello;

 

When I bought this medal I thought the green tinge was simple verdigris, however on close examination I see that it is the remains of a green paint. 
 

Has anyone seen this before on Japanese medals?

 

WHY did they paint this medal green? 

 

Should I carefully remove it?  Or was this a period application?

I have never seen a painted Japanese medal such as this. I also didn't find one on Medals of Asia. I have no idea if it was period applied. Sorry.

 

Hopefully someone will have some information or insight.
