Stefan Posted December 2 Posted December 2 I visited Stora Mjölö (in Swedish) or Isosaari (in Finnish) in the summer of 2023. Among all lovely coastal artillery remains there was a grave of a British chief petty officer / leading seaman - George Quinell from the steamer Amphion. Text on the sign: The Englishman's Grave At the end of the Crimean War in 1855, an English flotilla attacked Sveaborg. The fortress's outdated cannons could not effectively respond to the 81 attacking ships. 63 Russian and Finnish defenders lost their lives. In the battles, the English seaman George Quinell also lost his life during a reconnaissance mission. Quinell served on the steam frigate Amphion. He is believed to have lost his head when a projectile from Sandhamn hit him. He was identified using tokens and later buried on Mjölö. In 2003, the British ambassador visited the grave and laid a wreath at it. //Stefan 1
