Some time ago, a member asked where I had obtained various ROK medals.  Having lost the identity, I gave a vague answer, but i was cleaning out some files yesterday and came an old msg.

         130-2, Guansoon-Dong, Jongro-Gu, Seoul, Korea 110-420

          Jungil-Sa

          Tel. 82-2 - 2267-0826 / 2274-3720

    President: Hee-Kwan Chang

The info dates from 2005.  I have no idea whether the president or the company  are still there, nor whether ODM are available or not.  I visited the place at that time and was able to get of the medals in this picture then, but only because I was accompanied by a ROK Army colonel who knew the president.

    I visited Jungil-sa in 1999.

I was able to talk to the son of the original owner.

It appears that the grandson of the original owner or a new owner now controls the company.

They now have a website that went live on 2-25. Unfortunately the site is only in Korean.

    It is located at http://jungilsa.com/index.php

It primarily shows only the current Orders, Merit Medals and Commendations of the central South Korean government.

However, Jungil-sa no longer manufactures these medals.

There are no pictures of any medals that they have made or are currently manufacturing.

In June 1986, the medal production rights for Korea's Orders, Merit Medals and Commendations were transferred to a division of the Korea Minting, Security Printing and ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO; Korean한국조폐공사). KOMSCO is a state-owned corporation.

The ministries have their own sets of medals and commendations, and as far as I can determine, are not required to use the KOMSCO, but probably do.

It is my contention, that the inferior quality of Korea's current ODMs is due to the fact that they are produced by government employees. The majority of Korean Medals manufacture before 1986 were of much better quality and a large percentage of these earlier medals were manufactured by Jungil-sa.

If you want to visit the company, there is an address and map on their website.
