EK 1939 Enameled IC 2nd class

Hello Gentlemen!

For my first posting in this forum I have chosen to show this enameled IC 2nd cl., mm 128.

The 1813 on the reverse has not been polished, but is faintly visible through the enamel.

Comments and thoughts would be appreciated.

In my opinion the cross looks like a good EK2 from S. Jablonski GmbH Posen, maker '128'.

I'm not sure that the cross is actually enamelled, as the EK2s were mainly painted using black enamel paint which was finished by baking in an oven. I beleive that some manufacturers also used a type of powdered paint which was also baked on, but which could produce a slightly thicker, more glossy finish. So it could be that yours simply has a more glossy sheen to it than some. That said, from what I can see in the picture, the other alternative is that it may have been repainted at some point in time - in particular the rear - with a glossy enamel paint.

Either way, in my opinion, it looks like a good cross.

Have added a new picture from another angel. I'm quit sure this is enamel but it's difficult to show this in a picture. I have compared it to enameled miniatures from WW I and the appearance is the same. What I'm trying to show in the new photo is how thick the layer is, especially around the edges. The layer is well over the gap between the core and the rim. It looks like when you have some liquid i a small container, the level around the edges will raise above the center. There is also some cracks around the year which is typical enamel cracks. I don't believe this was done by the maker but rather by a jeweller. Why? Repair or just to make it more attractive, maybe for a parade mount? Your guess is as good as mine, but I think it's an interesting personalised cross
