As described in the Medal Yearbook 2008, serial no 176A , published by Token Publishing Limited :

"The medal was awarded on the recommendation of the Kaid el' Amm(SDF Commander) to native personnel of the SDF,Police and other approved Sudanese who served in the field on such operations as might be considered by the Governor-General as being of sufficient importance to warrant the grant of the medal. It was also awarded for action against Italian forces in the southern Sudan from June 1940 to November 1941.About 9000 were issued."

From the November 1993 Spink Numismatic Circular:

SDF DSM - silver unamed. Rare. Near EF GBP375.

SDF Native Officer's Decoration, silver, edge engraved with Arabic inscription. Scarce. Good VF GBP150.

SDF LS&GC, bronze, edge engraved with Arabic inscription. Scarce. Good VF GBP100.

SDF GSM, 1933, silver. EF GBP200.

An example of the SDF LSGC went for about GBP700 (+hammer) in the September 2007 DNW auction! Ouch!

Ray, Yes this is the 1st type with a rhino and the word "Al Wajib" (The Duty) on the obverse and "Jumhuriyah Al Sudan" (Republic of Sudan) on the reverse. After the military coup in 1969 (??) the reverse changed to "Democratic Republic of Sudan" and the rhino was replaced by a bird (hawk/stork (?). Regards, Owain

    Ray,

From the regulations it is noted that the medal comes in 3 classes and is awarded to Sudanese and foreigners who "perform distinguished service in furtherance of security and public order".

    Kind regards,

    Owain
