JapanX Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) Absolutely unknown award from National Government of the Republic of China ... Also known as "Air Force Medal" or simply "Flying Medal". No info about "who", "when" and "what for"... Breast star (reverse numbered 10) Enjoy! Edited May 23, 2012 by JapanX
Hugh Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Fascinating! I've never seen nor heard of it, but the ROCAF insignia is unmistakeable. Best, Hugh
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 (edited) Well, I found out what this small medal from post # 2 is. But the breast star is still mystery. Although both (breast star and small medal) have identical inscription on obverse... Flight Medal (a.k.a. Medal of Flying) It was established on August 1, 1935 in two classes (or grades, if you like this word better )1st class2nd class It is awarded for achievement in aviation competitions to officers, soldiers or civilians. Original name of this medal (four hieroglyph`s on obverse) Edited May 26, 2012 by JapanX
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 1st class medal (this specimen has number 136 stamped on reverse)
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 2nd class medal (this specimen has number 65 stamped on reverse)
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 Apart from differences in ribbon and enamel color 1st class medal is gold gilded and 2nd class is in silver. Take a look at these reverses
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 The reverses of medals bears stamped number and (typical for Nationalist medals) Bureau of decorations seal. Here it is.
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 And here we have nice scan of reverse of the 1st class medal numbered 131
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 (edited) Interesting that originally both classes of this medal had identical three-color ribbons. Like this one ;) Edited May 26, 2012 by JapanX
JapanX Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 (edited) The ribbon design was changed to modern one after exodus. The only question is: are brest star and Flight Medal related? I wonder... Cheers, Nick Edited May 26, 2012 by JapanX
JapanX Posted May 27, 2012 Author Posted May 27, 2012 你好 JC! Yes, I agree with you that breast star from post #1 probably has no relation to original "Flying tigers". But what is it? Any ideas? 问候, Nick
jcwater Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 你好 JC! Yes, I agree with you that breast star from post #1 probably has no relation to original "Flying tigers". But what is it? Any ideas? 问候, Nick 样品~28年~32年国民政府区别于北洋政府时期的奖赏制度制定的很多勋章样式到最后都没有实际颁发。这应该只是试制的样品。
JapanX Posted May 27, 2012 Author Posted May 27, 2012 (edited) So you think this is trial order from 1928-1932 period that was never actually issued. Interesting... I wonder why this sample has number 10 stamped on reverse... Is this simply an example number or is it the actual number of one of these trial medals?! Thanks, Nick Edited May 27, 2012 by JapanX
JapanX Posted May 27, 2012 Author Posted May 27, 2012 Unfortunately I don't have photo of the reverse. Info about the number came from the auction house...
JapanX Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 我个人认为那个10的编号无任何实质意义。样章有打编号的先例。比如剿赤勋章。 Yes, as I said before trial medal may have any number ... Couldn`t understand the name of the medal that you are bringing as an example (please post it name in English or (even better ) in Russian)... By the way, if this piece is indeed trial medal, then I think this breast star is too http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/54437-uknown-and-beatiful-republican-breast-strar/
