Old Style Ribbon Bar: The Mail Must Get Through!
"Patches" here is in the Imperial Feldpost. This ex-serviceman from Southwest Africa is a "Postschaffner" who has replaced his proper Reichskokarde with a state cockade (thanks Chip! ):
1) Military Decoration 2nd Class rather than a World War Iron Cross, betcha
2) mystery ribbon (some sort of peacetime merit award, if only we knew where he was from?)
3) the Herero-Hottentot war of 1904/06 War Medal with campaign bars.
So here we have an EX-military bar being worn by a "civilian" in uniform at the front.
In 1934, would Herr Tattered Feldgrau Uniform have been qualified for a non-combatant Hindenburg Cross????????
