Wreath with Sword Fight: Gold Finnish Cross of Liberty

The "wrestling donut" device is one used on Finnish Crosses of Liberty to indicate that it was a combatant military award. The full size of this is the suspension above the Cross.

A gold device on this red and white ribbon indicates a 3rd Class. A silver device (see that scan) would be 4th Class, and gold device on different ribbons was the 2nd Class in the initial 1918 and renewal 1939 and 1941 versions--so dated on the back.

Germans received the 1918 and 1941 types. This is quite a scarce device on German ribbon bars, as here, though normal on Finnish ones. For complete ribbon bars with these, see the main Article text section.

This is on a German ribbon bar, but I have no doubt that aall these devices were actually Finnish-made. They are identical to those found on Finnish ribbon bars. German military effectss deaalers seem to have skipped devices altogether or just used the normal German style swords.
