    1. hi nick i managed to get a photo of the kiwi based russo japanese war red cross medal not the best shot of the obverse bit of a struggle to get this the reverse is the russo japanese version
    2. sorry nick didnt get a photo but i can assure you it was silver it was part of an estate that included a russo japanese war medal with document meiji era 7th class gk with document dated 1906 and a number of cased reservist badges with documents its very rare to find anything like this here the seller picked them up at an estate auction they may have come from a japanese family that settled in nz i dont think it was brought back by a nz serviceman cant see a soldier bothered with documents, anyway only a guess
    3. hi all there has been an identical russo japanese war silver red cross medal sitting on our auction site for around a month here in new zealand, definately silver in colour did not think it was special so didnt bid sold yesterday for 20 nz dollars doh seller also noted "' made of silver not sure of content"" it also had no suspension device
    4. thanks nick, bar swords helmets and bayonets, medals and badges are under collected here with strange variations in price ie meili 7th class golden kite medal and case with 1906 award document sold for $140NZ against a common china incident medal no case sold for $ 80nz fyi nz dollar .80 cents to us dollar
    5. interesting pieces after seeing mess and wardroom collections on larger royal navy warships it wouldnt surprise me if the jugs were shipboard items they also look a bit older than the tongs and napkin rings a number of very similar ijn marked knives forks and spoons and sugar tongs recently sold here in nz seller noted that they were a vet bring back ? nick seeing you mentioned price of these badges i picked up this one in australia for $40
    6. hi mervyn many thanks for your expert reply im very happy that you have identified the 2 long spears as zulu yes the other long spear with the leopard skin breaks down into 3 pieces with the wooden piece in the middle when assembled ,of interest my father in law gave these to us when we left africa in 1987 he also gave us a large shield around the same height as the spears black and white in colour from the same farmer new zealands climate did not agree with it and it rotted i always regretted not trying to conserve it again thanks for your help mickey
    7. many thanks mervyn i have posted a close up of the binding on the middle 2 the one with the leopard skin has always intrigued me a bit as it separates into 3 pieces someone told me that they were made for hunting dangerous game ie you dig the tail of the spear into the ground when the animal springs at you it falls on the blade and carries the blade piece away this may be a bushfire story i think
    8. hi mervyn just finished reading these great posts on the zulu and rememberd some spears i own that my father in law was given by a farmer in the tuegela ferry area in the mid 60s not the best pics the 2 in the middle are around 5 and a half feet long the blades are pushed into the wood and bound with what looks like copper wire the short ones blade looks hand made by hammering the other one doesnt look southern african but the skin looks genuine leopard regards mickey
    9. the pilot was lost in action over cambodia in 1942 the navigator disapeared over the indian ocean in an experimental aircraft in 1943 flying to germany one wonders if any evidence of documents or medals of these men still exist
    10. thanks for posted photos nick high quality medal for a big achievement perhaps ?
    11. hi all interesting photo of the asahi shimbun purchased k15 aircraft(2nd prototype) named kamikazi became the first japanese aircraft to fly to europe and in in record time (51 hours) for the coronation of king george the 6th in 1937 pilot masaaki linuma and navigator kenji tsukagoshi both received the french legion of honour it is also noted that both men received aero society of japan medals some time later as well as japanese goverment medals ???? asahi shimbun also commisioned sake bottles with images of the aircraft i wonder if any collectors have one, both men were treated as heros in japan im sure there must be some photos of them wearing their medals
    12. thanks for photos nick easier to make a comparision looking at the circle and dots in the centre you would almost put money on the badges being designed by the same person the introduction dates of the badge are close too
    13. very nice badge interestingly very similar design to the type 4.1 and 4.2 japanese wound badges

      honor chord

good point nick i would imagine the chord would be a base item and the emblem added as per order especially family crests it would be nice if we could find out the relevance of why they were worn
