Dear colleagues,

in behalve of the daugther of one of this soldiers, I'm trying to find out more. Since my knowledge of details regarding british/commonwealth uniforms is quite limited, I need help establishing the nationality of these two. She belives the picture is taken in northern Germany during the early months/years of occupation after WW2. That would make them Brits/Canadians (or maybe Belgians?).

Any input on this would be appreciated greatly.

The hallmark seems to be from Chester for the year 1900.

The makers mark is difficult. It might be:

E & F.B. - Emil & Frank Bauer, Jewellers, Albion Street, Birmingham

The point is how did it end up in Germany?

A German soldier fighting the British in the Ottoman soil took it home and lost it while working on the field.

It is from a field near Berge (Nauen), were during WW1 a POW camp for russians was located. The POWs were employed to disperse the houshold garbage from Berlin on the surrounding fields. Houshold garbage back than was 80% organic waste, so it made sense to try use it as fertilizer. This continued until the late 1920s. Many smaler metal objects turn up there.

I recived the item today. It is made of thin brass, very nicely done. Even if it is not military (but it looks sort of offical to me), I would be glad, if someone could translate the inscription.

Puklaki is the Austrian form of Pukliaky (Khmelnytskyi Oblast), Galizia (Ukraine).

Looks like a post horn to me, could it have something to do with the Postal service, maybe post office volunteers.

This horn is the traditional sign of the infantry. You can find it i.e. on all French Napoleonic infantry buttons.

You have to be very lucky indeed... the last show I was at you would be very hard pressed to find even the junkiest for under EUR30 :-(

25 € is the price at flea markets, or if you buy one from another collector.

Wild guessing from this realy nasty picture... Just by the shape of the Hallmark, the maker could be Storck & Sinsheimer, Hanau.

In Germany you will get them around 25,00 Euro.
