Thanks for the input so far!! The return address on the reverse of the box is the "Director of Navy Accounts, Branch 3B D Block Foxhill Hutments, Bath, Sommerset". Could this point to Coast Guard Service? I would be glad, if somebody with an ancestry.uk access could maybe look him up?

I have this small Defence Medal Set and would like to know, if it´s possible to determine the occupation (e.g. fire brigade, Home Guard ...) for which the recipient received his Defence Medal? The medal was awarded to an Mr W. T. Jeffree from Kilivose Camborne in Cornwall. By Google I was able to find a William Thomas Jeffree Born in 1909 from Camborne, but I don´t know if that´s my recipient?!

In the 2nd one under Strafen they have something new for the 27.1.18 and 21.3 18... Did they then cancel it all?
Yes, he was pardoned by a decree of the emperor (given on the emperor´s birthday), which was confirmed by the court on the 21.03.1918. Most probably many soldiers punished for minor infractions were pardoned on this occasion!?

I don´t know, if they received the new version for free or if they had to buy the medal.

In 1910 he would´ve been awarded the brooch version, the medal version of the 2nd class was only introduced in july 1913.

The Landwehr Dienstauszeichnung 2. Klasse was awarded after 12 years of Service: 2 years of active service and 10 years of service in the reserve, when at least 3 months of reserve exercises were accumulated.

Very interesting medalbar, I´ve never seen a mounted Mine Rescue Medal before! The owner had an interesting career for sure as a WWI senior NCO and then in the Mine Rescue Service.

WWI veterans, who never got their Verwundetenabzeichen could, from 30. January 1936 onwards, get a certificate to obtain a badge. From this date on it was not only awarded according to the number of wounds, but the severity was also taken into consideration, so your great grandfather would´ve qualified for the silver grade!

Ludwig Erhard, chancellor from 1963-1966, served 1916-1918 with an artillery unit on the western front, was severely wounded and promoted to Unteroffizier. He received the Bayrisches Militärverdienstkreuz III. Klasse mit Schwertern
