This is an original Knight Cross with the Crown.
The griffin Order don't know a Knight Cross 1st Class or 2nd Class.
The maker is Rose. Most probably given to the Man in between 1904-1910.
No of awards: 600+
after quick search in my database I found 2 Persons in Service for the Congo State
1. Derche, Emile Jules Vincent - dob 11.07.1867 - Mreira, Oberadjunkt im Dienste des Kongostaates - RKmK 21.03.1908
2. Engh, Dr. jur., Martin - dob 24.03.1874 - Kristiania, Chef de zone de 1ere class an Congo Belge - RKmK 19.10.1908
I guess No. 2 is the seached previous Owner.

The last Order was given back in the 1950s.
After 1918 the authorities were not so strikt anymore as before.

Seeheld, your answer got me wondering. Were Mecklenburg-Schwerin awards to be returned to the Chancellery upon death of the recipiënt or upon receipt of a higher grade in the same order?

Herman
Yes,
this was the regulation.

Here some Informations from my private database:
Wickede, Bernhard Theodosius Friedrich von
KDM41 from Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1841 as
Schwerin, Brigadequartiermeister
He got his medal because of his service as a
Hauptmann im ?. Landwehr-Bataillon, 1815.
Further more he got also the LSC for Officers from Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

Actually I have 2 original crosses in my collection, but also the bad guys reading world wide...
At the moment the fakes are really so far away from a genuine one, because they do not know how it is looking in reality. And this is good for us collectors.

The MVK from Mecklenburg are actually very easy to identify and not a mine field. Almost all are fakes.
This example is a very simple fake, which is very far away from original Crosses.

Nice Picture, but I do not see any medal from Baden. The second medal is also from Bavaria.

Konteradmiral Karl August Theodor Julius Nerger
in Germany: Imperial: The Orders, Decorations and Medals of The Imperial German States
Posted
I have now checked the rolls twice.
Karl-August Nerger is actually not listed with a 1st class!
Yes, I know he received MVK1, but it was never recorded. This is the first case that has been discovered so far.
He probably received his MVK1 directly from the Grand Duke and then the inscription was forgotten.
I don't know it.
Sorry...
