I have just obtained a large archive of the "Warnick" family part of which is a nice picture (first I have seen) of a trench cross bow...has anyone seen a real one?

William Arthur Burton OBE was born on April 27, 1882, in France. He had one son and one daughter with Jessica Bacon Krogstad between 1912 and 1914. He died on July 15, 1956, in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, at the age of 74.
He enlisted in the militia (York and Lancaster regiment) in 1908

From August 1914 he was attached to the Ministry of Munitions in the USA... In 1916 he joined the Anglo-Russian Munitions committee... returned to the UK in May 1918 and released from the ministry of munitions. In June-July he was at Harrow doing an Intelligence officers Course until his deployment to France were he was desperately needed by GS (9) at HQ L of C (Lines of communication).

He was a civil engineer, and munitions specialist. Fluent French, Italian, with smatterings of German and Russian.

As a "Staff" member of the Intelligence Corps he would have worn "Green" gorgets which are missing (if anyone sees any please let me know)  

It's an EOD operation, not sure where!

So who was he....Major Frederick Spencer Arnold-Baker, late late Seaforth Highlanders, he became, Sir Frederick Spencer Arnold Baker, Senior Master, Central Office, Supreme Court of Judicature, and Queen's Remembrancer.

Sir Frederick Spencer Arnold-Baker (born 1 April 1885) was the son of Frederick Arnold-Baker (born 30 Dec 1845) and Helen Catherine Nairne (born 1 Sept 1843), and grandson of the New Zealand water-colorist Major Richard Baker (1810–1854). 

Matriculated 1903. Oriel College, Greys Inn, Barrister, called to the bar 1909.

He was the Queen's Remembrancer from 1951-1957 and Knighted in 1954. His uncle, General Sir Charles Edward Nairne, was Commander-in-Chief, India in 1898. 

He was a founder and the second President of the Lansdowne Club (1940–1954). 

Commissioned into the 3rd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, August 1914 and later served with the 2nd battalion, Captain Frederick Spencer Arnold Baker was Selected for duty in connection with Courts-Martial 30th June 1916. Captain (acting Major RAF 1918) staff officer second class (courts martial)

He was noted as one of the courts martial officers for;

Private Charles McColl, 1st/4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, shot at dawn, 28th December 1917 and;

Private Albert Botfield 9th South Staffordshire Regiment, shot at dawn, 18th October 1916

I cannot imagine how or why a commanding officers medals would have ended broken and thousands of miles from home... 

I hope to show an even stranger sad single victory in the next few days

Correctly named to Lt Colonel G. D. Carleton.....who was appointed to command the 7th (service) battalion the Leicestershire Regiment from the 6th September 1914 to 1915. Lieutenant-Colonel G D Carleton also commanded the 1st battalion the Leicester Regiment in Ladysmith during the South African war. He also appears to have been an accomplished artist.

action at Laings Nek (6 to 9 Jun.). Operations in Transvaal, east of Pretoria July to 29 Nov. 00, including actions at Belfast (26 and 27 Aug.), and Lydenberg (5 to 8 Sept.). Despatches, Lond. Gaz., 8 Feb. and 10 Sept. 01.
Queen's medal with 4 clasps. King's medal with 2 clasps. for his service in WW1 he earned a 1914/15 star, British War & Victory Medal.

Commissioned 1876, born 1858 in India,Secunderabad, Madras, India,  he died in 1941

He also appears to have been an accomplished amateur painter

It's not beyond the bounds that he was put in for it but due to the end of the war it got either rejected or mislaid, needs to be investigated, clearly someone thought he got it or should have, what are the circumstances of his death, is there a regimental history?

No sadly a Bavarian lanyard still alludes me, my understanding is the blue was worn throughout the war by 3rd line troops, recruits and on leave....

Chris, could it be connected to the Bavarian republic of 1919?

Managed to get my one on ebay some time ago...still looking for the Pickel!!

My first medal was in 1974, just back from Op Shader (Iraq) 42 years between medals, so 31 years I would say is very possible
