    1. Yes, this is where I got it. Wonderful. Did I also get the Roy MacElwee group from you? I don't remember seeing the citation... I would like to have a translation, thanks!
    2. Thanks for the reply, great stuff. Couple questions: the Soviet Navy had Generals? One of the documents has a 1995 date. I assume that is an expiration date, then, since his tombstone says he died in 1992. Or is there another explanation?
    3. Here are some random close ups. I have closer shots of everything, if someone wants to PM me about it; is interested in it. Medals, orders and pins are, as far as I can make out: 10-15-20 years irreproachable service medals. medal for "combat" service (which I understand was sometimes awarded in lieu of a 10-year service medal). komsomol pin. 50-60-70 years USSR armed forced medals. 25 years impeccable service "veterans of USSR armed forces" medal. 100 years Lenin birthday commemorative. 30th anniv. Great Patriotic War. 1973-1974 Socialist "emulation" winner pins. Looks like he was a 40-year man, the earliest to latest dates are about 1956 - 1996.
    4. I've been clearing out the odds and ends from my collection, and this lovely little group tumbled into the light. I'm not sure what to do with it, except pass it along to a collector who is more into things like this. Help me with a value, please.
    5. ...and it can be yours for 0.99 cents....
    6. ...and lathes and metal polishes. I'm gonna dump it on eBay. "Suspicious Clouds Watch Fob from Outer Space Mongolia"
    7. Destroyed them!?! You're kiddin'.... de-Nipponized?? Why bother? Whoever did it sure did a world class job of cutting them out and polishing the thing down. Reverse between the arms is well rounded, you'd think there would be some tell-tale... I know! I know! This isn't the Tojo Special, it's to a Non Combatant!! Or... or maybe it's the Order of the Suspicious Clouds 8th Class.
    8. That's it! I couldn't remember the name of it. Thanks once again. But what could the sweet little paulownia leaf medallion be? And why is the medal missing the pieces between the arms, like yours has? I know! Its... its the ultra rare First Version awarded only to Tojo's nephews!!!!
    9. Check this out. What is the medal? The medallion?
    10. Thanks Brian, it is a lovely specimen. I love the vibrancy and the feel of the fabric, which I assume is silk? I have a couple originals, one of which hangs from my Type 94. I'll post it sometime.
    11. Period? Reproduction? Pristine condition indicates the latter, but what else do you look for?
    12. Lots of weirdness to go around. I think the precedence in the 4-place ribbon bar in post #1 is also strange? Have a look....
    13. I would NEVER tear apart a bar of any sort, Frankenstein or no. But I would sell it for the aggregate price of its parts. I'm of the school that believes (most) medal bars are worth that only, w/o a premium for the mounting. . . however that is a topic for another thread. But looky what I found (below). It came with the second bar I posted, above. So... someone took the trouble to cobble together a medal bar AND a matching ribbon bar? Hmmm.... the plot thickens....
    14. I'll have to think on the third bar. It goes with my cased Golden Kites and award documents, and the veteran's memorabilia (a pin, a bowl, a cup) I have with the medal's likeness on them. As for the other two (Frankenstein) bars, I don't see anyone doubting the authenticity of the medals themselves. After combing through domestic dealer's sites, I have come up with a "retail" number for each. I'll probably eBay them "Buy It Now" for the aggregate price of the individual medals... less the price of the common, low value Red Cross medals. Basically, there will be two chances to own seven authentic Japanese medals for the price of six, with hangers thrown in gratis. I'll also add the ribbon bar to one of the listings. Naturally, I'll be sure to alert potential buyers that the bars are suspect in construction per the information gleaned from this thread, and my rationale on pricing. Thanks for the help! I'll get back to you on the third bar soon.
    15. Even a blind hog can root up an acorn now and then.
    16. Hello gents. I forgot I had this group, and found it tucked away last night. Got me to thinking.... This looks like a good place to announce the following. Heart surgery a couple years ago really slowed me down, and put me on a Different Path. My third novel is almost complete and ready to publish. Furthermore (bear with me)... The Nest is empty! My daughter graduated the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts and is now living it up in the Emirates, working as Lighting Director at Dubai-Land... and my son is, well.... doing what lots of rebellious sons like to do to get out of the Old Man's shadow. In and out the revolving door. But basically he's independent. Since the long suffering wifey-wife and I are not getting nay younger, I'm getting a LOT of pressure to start liquidating some of my long time acquisitions. Fine by me. I agree it's time. I'll start with the peripherals.... The group in this thread is a good example of something not central to what I collect (cased Imperial German decorations/orders, Day Badges (tinnies) 1895-1945, Imperial EK's and EK non-combatant medal bars, Finnish medal groups, Lineol toys, Wehrmacht and Japanese naval photo albums, Soldbuchs/Militarpassen/NS membership books and stamps, and some other stuff I have posted here and there over the years. You've seen the breadth and depth of it. So there's gonna be a massive sell-off beginning very soon. Some of you may know me as author of The Great Tinnie War thread over at WAF, still to my knowledge the longest, most-posted thread in any forum's history. (I'm gonna unload a few hundred tinnies that are posted there very soon, if anyone is interested.) Otherwise, I'm starting with this group. Don, I know you'll see this. I promised you First Bite long ago. PM me and let me know if you are interested. We can come up with a plan, if you need time. There's plenty of other things to sell without having you break the piggy bank open on something that really does belong in your collection. Everyone else, keep an eye peeled on the Classifieds sometime in mid-January. Or... there's so much stuff I might just post it all to my (private) website and supply a link. We'll see. Whatever is best for the Forum and its members. Stay tuned... there's gonna be a hoot and a holler.... :jumping:
    17. Never have, never would . "I yam what I yam, etc." as Popeye sez.
    18. Yes, interesting. Many thanks! "If he was a private or NCO then he should`t have so many medals in his bar..." So if I read into this correctly, the Japanese mind set was different from his German counterparts', where you sometimes see lo-o-ong medalbars to low-to-non ranking, fairly undistinguished vets, loaded up with an EK2 and his state's analogy, several veteran's dongles, a couple of theatre participation medals and an HK. No Nipponese subject of the Emperor would stoop so low as to load up his chest with low-grade cabbage just to impress the guys down at the sake bar? Then I'll take it that these contraptions were cobbled together like cheap Christmas trees in Santa's workshop. They came from Japan, not the States, and probably along with some fire department badges, a selection of cased medals and some enameled veterans association pins. They are not my forte, and not very appealing... which explains why they got shoved into a forgotten drawer. I don't want them. Should I take them apart and sell the medals individually? That also is not my forte. I don't do that sort of thing. Perhaps sell them as is, along with a caveat and a link to this thread? Advice? BTW here is the third bar, which came with the other two, (and to me) looks a lot like the one in one of the posts, above.
    19. PS I threw in the ribbon bar and the Red Cross medal award doc (which my wife stood on its head when she took the pics for me) as "extras." I have a third bar somewhere, will post it up soon: it has a Golden Kite medal on it! What is the value of such items?
    20. The second one. Can someone identify the classes of some of these?
    21. These have been hiding in the back of a drawer lo! these many many years. I was looking for something entirely different when I hauled them into the light of day...
    22. Thanks bro. Exactly what I was looking for.
