Saw this, thought it was interesting that a medal that hasn’t been sanctioned yet. Given the recent announcement of the nuclear vets medal, could this medal now get some traction?

……and what then about the National Defence Medal?

Doubt it mate. The Arctic Star was issued with the GVIR cypher on it. I reckon it'll be an EIIR medal, if it's not already going to be a GSM.
Fair point, but what about Korea or indeed Waterloo medals. Both bear the effigy of the monarch at the time of issue not at the time of the campaign.

I see there are still some chancers, listing these and other recent jubilee medals on a popular online auction site, for exuberant amounts of money. Whether there still however commanding these premium now, however, remains to be seen. Come May I fear they’ll be another frenzy and prices for these and the Coronation medal (should one be awarded), will sky rocket again??

Anyone been awarded or even seen an example yet?

Whilst this thread is many years old, and no one has replied to the question posed in the last post, I can tell you that the Islander in question was Terry PECK CPM. Terry was a former Chief of the Falkland Islands Police and after the invasion assisted, in a number of ways, the RM's in the days leading up to the invasion. I think he was awarded the MBE for his efforts and possibly a SAM. He died several years ago.
Dave.
Thanks for the update Dave, very interesting and greatly appreciated!!
Having watched the Remembrance Sunday parade, this year (40th anniversary), I have to say I was surprised by how many RAF veterans supported this medal. I can wasn’t aware that they had taken such an active roll in the campaign. I am of course aware of the Vulcan bombing of Stanley operation. But surely that alone couldn’t account for the vast number of medals evident during the parade?
Any thought?0 -
Could the new nuclear test veterans medal, be a contender here, do we think?

Anyone aware of any update, with regards to any potential criteria for this award?

Interesting, but I would say not.
Having said that mind, I have seen campaign star groups with both the war and defence medals, but with no 39-45 star. Not sure how that works?

I was a member of the UK Police DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) Team which was deployed following the Boxing Day Tsunami and apart from a couple of MBE’s or OBE’s awarded to senior officers nothing else was awarded. There had been talk many years ago about a possible Police Overseas Deployment Medal and a Humanitarian / Peacekeeping Service Medal but nothing ever came to fruition. I believe that there have been a number of missed opportunities since to create these medals with the creation of several different medals (e.g. IRSM, Civilian Service Medal (Afghanistan) and the Ebola Medal) when they could have just had one medal with different clasps in relation to Humanitarian service. IMHO.
There has been (and likely will be again) opportunities that this medal would satisfy demand for (Covid response instantly springs to mind), but alias like you have pointed out, nothing has come to the forefront.

New Zealand created a separate series of 'Special Service Medals' which were awarded to recognise participation in other activities - things like the Boxing Day Tsunami, rescuing an aircraft that crashed in Antarctica, etc., as well as their nuclear test programme - and which are quite distinct from their medals and clasps for campaign service.
New Zealand has some really nice looking medals. Really do wish the U.K. would follow suite and create new awards to encompass events that have thus far been overlooked. Sadly these things are soon forgotten, by those not personally involved or touched by.
The campaign for a National Defence Medal, like you guys have had been rumbling on for years, but never gaining any traction.

what a fantastic achievement. Congratulations. Would love to see a picture of the medal and a picture of you in uniform as well as a career summary? Only if you feel comfortable of course, its just things like this are so interesting. 20 years in the job will soon be a thing of the past.
Thanks mate.
I will be sure to do that, when the medal arrives.
Here’s a picture of my medal ribbons, in the meantime.

And especially now that bars are sanctioned for the medals.
I don’t believe there will be a further reduction anytime soon, as there’s not long been one from 22 to 20. But who knows, what the future may bring. NZ Police only have to do 14 years for there’s!
Inter changeable qualification criteria, now there’s an interesting concept….

Interesting comment on another platform, made by a Metropolitan Police Officer
“My medal presentation with the Metropolitan Police this month has been postponed until January. The reason given being a mix up in the Home Office over engraving our medals, but I expect it is to prepare us for King Charles III effigy on the new medals. I actually Gordon we qualified pre September 8th, but there has been such a backlog because of the pandemic that we are only just catching up now. Since these medals are a gift from the Monarch, and not simply issued, I would suspect a line has been drawn, and from Jan 2023 all new long service medals presented in the MPS will have King Charles head on them.”
Anyone else heard this?
I do know that colleagues from my old force who qualified for their LSGC’s the same time as me, are yet to be contacted by HR to even acknowledge that they’ve qualified for theirs! I’m still to receive mine, although I was informed that I’d receive it by the end of this month (November)…….

I saw that too... but you beat me to it posting here
New Zeland's equivalent, the New Zealand Special Service Medal (Nuclear Testing) was instituted on 18 March 2002, and in common with other New Zealand Special Service Medals has the national arms on the obverse rather than a sovereign's head.
It will be interesting to see what design they come up with for this one.
😆 sorry about that!!!
From what I’m hearing. It appears that there be no new medal. But the first and second GSM’s rather will have this addition clasp added to them, depending on when the recipient qualified for it obviously.
Shame really, I was kinda hoping to see the first C111R campaign medal. Talking of C111R medals, still no sign of any LSGC’s…….

Will certainly be interesting to see whether, this medal does in fact have a E11R effigy, or given the fact that it appears to have only just been announced today, whether it’ll be the first C111R medal?
“Downing Street said the first awards will be made next year.” suggests that they haven’t been minted yet?The Royal Mint must certainly be a very busy place at the moment!!

A source has provided me with this…
”This was shared with me whilst part of Civil Contingent on the Queens funeral parade by a senior fire fighter”.
I strongly suspect, that all the emergency services bars will be the same.
Shame there seen on and not slide on, but at least this additional service is now being recognised, formally!!
Something that’s just occurred to me.
I have a friend who did 20 years in the Fire Service (got his LSGC), then left and did 17 years in the Police before retiring. Would the 10 years Police service count towards a bar on the Fire Service LSGC or are they separate medals in that regard?0 -

Have it on good authority, that the fire service bar is now being officially issued. Trying to obtain photo, will post as soon as I receive it.

Hello
Collecting today has become, in my opinion, more a matter of an agent than a passion.
Yes, our hobby is expensive, yes, we like it. But not at any price.
For example, a knight's cross ^1st class with swords of the Albert of Saxony order normally costs 650 700 euros in good condition. But now on the market people buy them for more than 1200 euros. So much the better for the seller, but why such a surge in price? Is it the rarity of the pieces? yes and no.
Personally, I'm not looking for big pieces anymore, I'm just looking for small items to see my collection grow. I don't find many of them now, so I save money.
This is my very personal point of view
ChristopheThis has similar pangs, to that of Victorian Jubilee Medals, whereby any medals named to H Division, demand the highest premiums for no apparent reason, other than the tenuous connection toJack the Ripper.

I've always just bought cheap medals. Most valuable I have is a Castelfidardo Medal which I got with an Austro-Hungarian WW1 medal for €15 from an antiques dealer who didn't care for medals. I prefer having a larger collection with people I can research rather than any rare medals. Most I'd pay for a medal would be €100 and I've only done that once for a BSAP Reserve Long Service Medal.
Yes I entirely agree, I would much prefer a humble LSGC or Victorian Jubilee medal, with loads of research potential, than an expensive rare medal with no research potential at all. Although I do have a couple of examples of expensive medals, which I have loads of research on, but they are few and far between!!!
All I can’t bear to even consider selling off any of my collection just yet. It is reassuring to learn that people are still collecting.

Would be interested to hear other collectors opinions on our hobby and the current cost of living crisis.
Can we expect to see a drop or increase in medal prices, or will they stay the same?
Will there be an increase or decrease, in the availability of medals, perhaps? As collectors decide to hold on to their collections until the market prices stabilise?
Are collectors considering selling off their collections or parts there of, in an attempt to make ends meet?0 -
I’m reliably informed that Merseyside police officers, who qualified after the 8th September have also been informed that their, having to wait for King’s effigy LSGCs.
But by the sounds of it, the Royal Mint haven’t even started to mint them yet? So who knows, perhaps we’ll all get Queen’s ones after all?

This surely has to be on of the last Queens Police Medals…?
