    1. It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the

      death of a British soldier in Iraq today, 26 March 2008.

      The soldier died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during a

      firefight in the early hours of this morning.

      The soldier's family have been informed, and have asked for privacy

      from the media as they come to terms with their loss.

      The MOD will not be providing any further updates in line with the

      wishes of the family, who are in our thoughts at this difficult time.

      The family have asked that no further information about the soldier be

      released, the MoD said.

      UK soldier killed in Iraq firefight

      A soldier has been killed in a firefight in Iraq

      A British soldier has been shot and killed in Iraq.

      The soldier died in a firefight in the early hours of Wednesday

      morning, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

      It is understood the soldier was not killed in Basra, the main base of

      British operations. Sources said he died in Baghdad.

      His next of kin have been informed and have asked for their privacy to

      be respected.

      The death brings the total number of British military casualties in

      Iraq since hostilities began in March 2003 to 176.

      The family have asked that no further information about the soldier be released.

      Officially, British soldiers are not involved in combat operations in

      Iraq. In December British forces withdrew to an airbase outside Basra,

      which they had patrolled for nearly five years.

      But in recent days US and Iraqi forces have been engaged in fierce

      fighting against Shiite militia both in Baghdad and Basra.

      The Ministry of Defence refused to comment on whether special forces

      troops were engaged in these operations.

      The attacks have left 15 dead in Baghdad's main Shiite district of

      Sadr City in recent days. Nationwide, some 300 people have been

      wounded, 200 of them in Basra.

    2. Dates, Makers, and Codes :

      In 1934 only two manufacturers where assigned to produce the K98k. These were the Mauser plant at Obendorf, and the firm of J.P. Sauer & Sohn at Suhl. Mauser, Obendorf was the only manufacturer to produce the K98 from 1934-1945. Each year later, other makers were added to produce the K98k, while some makers where dropped due to production demands or interests in producing other weapons, such as machine guns, machine pistols, or other small arms that were needed. By 1943 there were at least 7 factories that were producers of the rifle. Each makers code, dates, and proof markings for each year are listed below.

    4. Hi Guys,

      I`m toying with the idea of buying a K98, but before I part with my hard earned cash, I was hoping that any expert collectors out there could offer me some tips/advice, also how much should I look at paying?

      Gordon.

    5. Hi Guys,

      I`m trying to find out a bit more about what went on, on Hel Peninsula, particuarly during the German retreat. There seems to be scant information on the net (or I`m looking in the wrong place), to that end can some point me in the right direction, or supply me with a bit more info?

      Gordon.

    6. Now about $10-$25.00 all depends on how much the vendor wants to sell it for and how bad you want in in your collection:

      How much did they want for this one here on the post?

      Thank you

      SSG Luna, Lorenzo

      With gold currently at an all time high $1000 an ounce, you should snap these up!!! They go for a few hundred quid each on ebay!!!!!! :rolleyes:

    7. Nazi 3rd Reich Mint Marks

      The 3rd Reich had a number of mints (coin factories). Each mint location had its own identifiable letter. It

      is therefore possible to identify exactly which mint produced what coin by noting the mint mark (letter)

      on the coin. Not all mints were authorised to produce coins every year. The mints were also only

      authorised to produced a set number of coins with some mints allocated a greater production than

      others. Some of the coins with particular mint marks are therefore scarcer than others. With the silver 2

      and 5 Reichsmark coins, the mint mark is found under the date on the left side of the coin (see scans

      below). On the smaller denomination Reichspfennig coins, the mint mark is found on the bottom center

      of the coin.

      A = Berlin

      B = Wien (Vienna)

      D = M?nchen (Munich)

      E = Muldenh?tten (Dresden)

      F = Stuttgart

      G = Karlsruhe

      J = Hamburg

    8. Thought I`d better respond to this one before I get dagged before the Haig on war crimes charges. I certainly didn`t loot or plunder, anythign from Iraq, especially any of their gold....... I was only following orders....no but seriously, this coin was not stolen. In fact I don`t even have one of these coins in my collection, as there way out of my price range. I just came across it whilst surfing the net, thougth it looked nice, and would share it with the forum.

      But just out of interest Loz, how much can you pick them up for in Iraq?

      Gordon.

    9. Don`t know if you guys, have come across any of these?

      Basically its a one pound coin made out of sterling silver by the Royal Mint. Bit pricey for what they are, considering the silver content. I`ve seen them from between ?30 & ?40, will be interesting to see if they hold there price or not.

      Nice to look at & collect, if your wallet can cope... :speechless1:

      Various designs available, exactly the same as a normal ?1 coin.
