    1. Hi Guys,

Was surfing Ebay, when I cam across this thought I`d share it with you...

"This yellow topped coca cola bottle was purchased at the Bagdad Cafe in Iraq last year Possibly from the last batch to leave the ill fated factory now outside the green zone A must for all serious collectors it's in perfect condition and unopened it's the only one I have and the only one i've seen in Europe"

So what happened to the factory, does anyone know, I could find anything on the net?

    2. A nice coin, but I don`t think it`ll take the world by storm, in the same way as the Krugerrand has. A nice collectors piece none the less! I think I`m right in saying that there hasn`t been one issued since 2003, not sure how that will effect the market. Whether collectors will want it because there more unique, or put them off, as you can`t really put date sets together, in the same way as you can with the Sovereign. Time will tell I suppose.....

    3. The total number of UK troops killed while on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 has risen to 73 after the deaths of three soldiers in Helmand province on 24 August 2007.

Three British soldiers are killed in a suspected "friendly fire" incident involving US military aircraft while on operations in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan on 24 August.

    4. Gordon of Khartoum

      General Wolseley`s relief army…..

Wolseley wrote - Our gold sovereigns command no respect here, whereas great course Austrian silver dollars, are looked upon as real money. A man could bring here one hundred thousand in silver would make a good thing of it now in buying up all our sovereigns at a reduced price.

The sovereign is at a great discount & few Arabs here will take it.

Years after our expedition to Abyssinia, men of that country sold handfuls of sovereigns for a few silver dollars.

    5. Here you go sorry to take so long

Many thanks for taking the time to photograph this for us, Charlie. What a smashing example. I`ll have to keep my eye out for ones made into jewellery. Just out of interest where did you pick this one up? I wouldn`t be to put off by it being a relatively modern one, its still really nice, and who knows where its been & what its bought in the last 40 odd years? Might have been used during the Dhofar War to buy AK47 ammo for example. The imagination could run riot

      Gordon.

    6. I'd love to get one of them. Been on my list to get for a while.

      Some info here: http://www.theresia.name/en/

Eric, cracking webiste that that isn`t it!!!!!! Re buying one, I fully recommend them, and whats more they won`t break the budget!!!! Theres no shortage of them on the old Ebay. At first I thought if you`ve got one then you`ve got them all, but there seems to be many different types all on the same theme as it were. I also like the ones that have been made into something else (jewellery, power horns, decorations for rifles, etc). Theres some cracking pictures in Clara Semple`s book, its well worth a read, and a wealth of information on the coins themselves.

      Gordon.

    7. These coins comprisng gold 5 guineas, 1745 and 1746, guinea and half-guinea, 1745, silver crown, 1746, halfcrown, shilling and sixpence, 1745 and 1746. These were struck from Spanish treasure captured during Admiral Anson circumnavigation of the globe 1740-44. There are also British gold coins struck in 1703 with Vigo below the bust following the successful Anglo-Dutch expedition against the Spanish culminating in the victory in Vigo Bay, bullion seized from this was made into coins.

      Hope this is of interest.

      Paul

Very much so, thanks Paul. Just out of interest have you any idea how much the silver ones are worth, as I`ve seen them sell on Ebay from ?100 to less than ?20. I assume that the condition has something to do with it, but the ones I saw all looked very similar, I could account for the differnce in price, any ideas?

      Gordon.

    8. I have one that I paid four dollars for in Bahrain. I bet that it definitely made the rounds. I will have to try and find it.

      Paul

      Paul,

Look forward to that!! Post it on here if you can.

My Dad has some that the Sultan of Oman, threw into the air for some guests, during a party he had on board the Royal Yacht, in the early 80`s. I remember him saying that they were finding them all over the place for ages afterwards. Now I bet these had done the rounds, not to mention having an interesting story all of there own!!!!

      Gordon.

    9. Here's my Thalers: Proof, Uncirculated, Circulated, some of these have nice toning.

Coastie, an impressive collection, there!!! I like the one on the chain.

I`ve just picked up my second Maria for (what I think was a bargain ?4.40), its a restrike, but its a bit tarnished so it looks like it might have done the rounds....

    10. The total number of UK troops killed while on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 has risen to 70 after the death of a soldier in Helmand province on 11 August 2007.

Capt David Hicks from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment died after being injured in an attack on his patrol base north-east of Sangin in Helmand province on 11 August.

Capt Hicks also served in Bosnia and Iraq

The 26-year-old, from Wokingham, Berkshire, was described as an "outstanding officer" who always led from the front.

His commanding officer, Lt Col Stuart Carver, said that during the attack on the base, Capt Hicks had "led from the forward position" in order to direct the battle and "provide an inspiring example to his men".

He added: "Even after being mortally wounded his only concern was to get back into position to control the fight."

Private Tony Rawson from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment was killed on 10 August during a routine patrol in the area of Jusyalay, north east of Sangin, in Helmand Province.

Pte Rawson had previously served in Iraq

The 27-year-old from Dagenham, east London, known to his comrades as 'Nicey', joined the Army in 2002 and had previously served in Iraq.

His commanding officer, Lt Col Stuart Carver, said Pte Rawson was "passionate about his job, with a big heart and a generous and trustworthy personality who died courageously in close combat".

    11. TP,

      Very interesting stories!!!!!!

But your right it is all politics at the end of the day. But didn`t an Aussie win two VC`s in WW2? I know the other two double VC`s were RAMC doctors from the Boer War/ WW1. What was the name of the AIF guy who won the VC at Gallipoli, taking the trench and killing 7 Turks single handley?

Theres also that guy from the Lonr Range Desert Group who won 3 DSO`s that it was claimed should have been VC`s.

Beharry`s VC is also subject to debate (I believe). Not sure of the circumstances for the last VC to be honest, socan`t comment on that one.

Goin` off topic again, what the ribbon on your avatar?

    12. Define expensive :cheeky: These represent a range from $30 to maybe $150. Unc specimens would run higher, but, like my medals, I prefer a little honest wear so am happy to settle for XF.

If you're interested there's an AU Bremen on eBay now ending in a couple hours. Do a search in coins/ Europe/ Germany, 1871 and you'll come up with a few of the others.

Tom, I walked right into that one didn`t I  !!!!! $30 - $150, yeh thats about within my budget :cheeky: Like you I prefer the ones, that show signs of a little service. I`m just about spent up for this month, but thanks for the tip, I`ve got my eye on a few coins on ebay and elsewhere at the moment, there like buses aren`t they!!!.
