The 3rd ribbon in the first row is the Saxon Albert Order with swords, knight 2nd class. But the outfitter used the wrong ribbon, that of the Italian Messina 1908 earthquake medal.

The last ribbon in the 2nd row is simply the Red Cross decoration.

Thank you! Do you know what is the class of the Red Cross decoration?

And the Social Welfare Decoration then isn't on his ribbon bar? Only the breast decoration?

    2. Can someone please help me with the awards of following officers that are listed in the Reichsmarine Ranglisten?
Could you be kind enough and share the screenshots of their enteries in the Rangliste?

Marinegeneralarzt Dr. med. Ernst Böse (1922 Rangliste)
      Franz Claassen (1928 Rangliste)
      Victor Praefcke (1922 Rangliste)
      Wilhelm Wilke (1922 Rangliste)
      Erich Heyden (1928 Rangliste)
      (Ing.) Friedrich Hilbig (1922 Rangliste)

      Many thanks in advance!

      Maybe these as well:

      Heisinger

      Jorck, Harald von

      Rabe von Pappenheim, Herbold

      Rheinbaben, Werner von

      Saalwächter, Alfred

      Schulz, Edmund

      Selchow, Heinrich-Bogislaw von

      Tippelskirch, Ulrich von

      Türcke, Wilhelm von

      Waldegg, von

      Weizsäcker, Ernst Freiherr von

Yes. Do you know something about this medal?

    4. Did anyone ever hear about this medal: China Silberne Erinnerungsmedaille (China Silver Commemorative Medal) (not to be confused with the China-Denkmünze (China Medal) in Stahl (Steel).
I found info that 3 later Admirals (Edmund Schulz, Emil Heusinger von Waldegg and Alfred Saalwächter) that were on board the SMS Hertha in 1904 recieved this medal. And many other officers/sailors that were onboard the Hertha.
The only medal I managed to find is the Inoffizielle Erinnerungsmedaille "Zum Andenken an meine Dienstzeit in China" but this one was in Bronze. Was there perhaps a version in Silver?

    5. Neck order (From top to bottom)
      - Kgl. Preuß. Kronen-Orden II. Klasse mit Schwertern
      - Komtur I. Klasse des Kgl. Württembg. Friedrichs-Ordens mit Schwertern
      - Finn. Freiheitskreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern

      Medal Bar : 13 medals
      - 1914 EK II
      - Kgl. Preuß. Roter Adler-Orden IV. Klasse
      - Kgl. Preuß. Kronen-Orden III. Klasse
      - Braunschweigisches Kriegsverdienstkreuz II. Klasse
      - Hanseatenkreuz Hamburg
      - Hanseatenkreuz Bremen
      - k.u.k. Österr. Orden der Eisernen Krone III Klasse mit der Kriegsdekoration
      - k.u.k. Österr. Militär-Verdienstkreuz III Klasse mit der Kriegsdekoration
      - Round medal, perhaps the Finn. Erinnerungsmedaille des Freiheitskrieg 1918 ??? (notice the clasp above it!) (since he has the Finn. Freiheitskreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern)
      - ??? (perhaps one of his 2 Russian awards?)
      - Kgl. Preuß. Kaiser Wilhelm-Erinnerungsmedaille 1897 ???
      - China Denkmünze in Bronze or Kolonial Denkmünze ??? (he was in Tsingtau, China for three months in 1898) The ribbon above this medal has straight vertical lines, I took this photo with a phone so it doesn't show the lines, but I can see the lines when looking at this photo in the book.
      - RK II. Klasse des Kgl. Sächs. Albrechts-Ordens

Here is the full list of his awards from Rangliste 1914 and 1918:

      - 1914 EK I
      - 1914 EK II
      - Kgl. Preuß. Kaiser Wilhelm-Erinnerungsmedaille 1797-1897 (“Centenarmedaille”)
      - Russischer St. Annen-Orden III. Klasse
      - Russischer St. Stanislaus-Orden II. Klasse
      - Kgl. Preuß. Roter Adler-Orden IV. Klasse
      - Kgl. Preuß. Kronen-Orden III. Klasse
      - RK II. Klasse des Kgl. Sächs. Albrechts-Ordens
      - Komtur I. Klasse des Kgl. Württembg. Friedrichs-Ordens mit Schwertern
      - Braunschweigisches Kriegsverdienstkreuz II. Klasse
      - Braunschweigisches Kriegsverdienstkreuz I. Klasse
      - Türkischer Eiserner Halbmond
      - Kgl. Preuß. Dienstauszeichnungskreuz
      - Hanseatenkreuz Hamburg

      Presumably he also had:

      - Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer

      - Finn. Freiheitskreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern (3rd medal around the neck)

      - Finn. Erinnerungsmedaille des Freiheitskrieg 1918 (because he recieved the Finn. Freiheitskreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern, also I don't know if he's wearing it on the photo)

      - Kgl. Preuß. Kronen-Orden II. Klasse mit Schwertern (around the neck, first medal)

      - Hanseatenkreuz Bremen (not listed in the 1918 Rangliste, but perhaps he recieved it after 1918, we can't check because he retired in 1920)

It seems he didn't mount the 2 Russian awards he had and also the Kgl. Preuß. Dienstauszeichnungskreuz?

I can try and take a better photo from the book if needed.

And please do correct me if I made any mistakes!

      Thanks!

    6. Hello, can someone help me with the Bios and photos (photos are very important) of the following Admirals:

      Marinegeneralstabsarzt Dr. Ernst Böse
      Vizeadmiral (Ing.) Ernst Friedrich
      Konteradmiral Karl Klüpfel
      Konteradmiral (Ing.) Wilhelm Korreng
      Konteradmiral Hans Küsel
      Konteradmiral Albrecht Meissner
      Marinegeneralstabsarzt/Admiralarzt Edgar Pillet
      Konteradmiral Leo Riedel
      Marinegeneralstabsarzt/Admiralarzt Dr. Friedrich Titschak
      Konteradmiral Wilhelm Wilke
      Konteradmiral Fritz Wossidlo

And is the bio of Admiralarzt Viktor Praefcke on this page correct? https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Praefcke

      Many thanks!

I would say that it is for the 4th class which IIRC would be the correct level for a Vice Admiral, however I don't think the device is correct.

      Cheers

      Larry

Keep in mind he was a Kapitan zur See during that time, not a Vizeadmiral. So you still think it's the 4th Class? I.e. the Officer's Cross?

The last two, on the top row, look to be the Spanish War campaign medal and the Order of Military Merit (red) for combatants. To be totally correct, ribbon bars for combatants should have crossed sword attachments on both....not unusual for them to be forgotten.

As to the bottom bar....yes, it is the correct ribbon for the Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure and with rosette it is most likely the 4th class....to be sure, you should post the bar in the Asia forum.

Thank you John. I believe the 2nd to last ribbon in the first row is the Spanish Order of Naval Merit, because the owner of this ribbon bar, Vizeadmiral Joachim Lietzmann was the recipient of the Grand Cross of the Spanish Order of Naval Merit with White Decoration.

And the Spanish War campaign medal has black stripes on each end of the ribbon.

    9. Hello, does someone own all 4 scanned volumes of the "Hans H. Hildebrand und Ernest Henriot: Deutschlands Admirale 1849-1945":

      Band 1. A-G (Ackermann – Gygas).
      1988. 481 Seiten.

Band 2. H-O (Habicht bis Orth).
      1989. 555 Seiten.

      Band 3. P-Z.
Osnabrück, Biblio Verlag, 1990, Gebundene Ausgabe, Ganzleineneinband, 617 Seiten.

      Band 4. Marinebeamte im Admiralsrang.
Osnabrück, Biblio Verlag, 1996, Gebundene Ausgabe, Ganzleineneinband, 277 Seiten.

And if yes, would you be willing to share them?

They are very rare to buy in phisycal form and pretty expensive. As I am a history student I really need them for research purposes.

I also know about the ABR sites that are based on these books, but they only list WW2 officers.

      Many thanks.

    10. Hello,

This is an offcier whose ranks confuse me:

      Charakter als Kapitän zur See (11 Dec 1920);
      Charakter als Konteradmiral (01 Jun 1940);
      Kapitän zur See z.V. (07 Apr 1941)

Why was he promoted to Kapitän zur See z.V. and didn't get the patent to Konteradmiral z.V.? Is it because earlier he was only a Charakter als Kapitän zur See?
If so, look at his photo below, he is clearly wearing and Admirals cap. So if the photo was taken after 07 April 1941 (when he was promoted to Kapitän zur See z.V.) does this mean he was still allowed to wear a Konteradmirals uniform even though he was promoted to Kapitän zur See z.V.?

As previously explained to me: "A charakterisierter Konteradmiral wears the Uniform of a Konteradmiral and is adressed as "Herr Admiral", but he is serving in the position of a Kapitän zur See and paid as such. Very often, officers received the Charakter of the next higher rank with their retirement as an appreciation of their services." But Erler was promoted to Charakter als Konteradmiral while placed at the disposal of the Kriegsmarine, not before retiring.

Could someone share any light on this particular case?

      Many thanks.

      Hello,
the medal was donated to commemorate the hundredth birthday of Emperor Wilhelm I. The circle of people
was relatively large. It was awarded u.a. to all persons of the active army and the active navy, members of
the protection troops and also to veterans of the wars 1864, 1866 and 1870/71. The award number should
be well over one million medals. I hope, that helps you a bit.
      Best regards
      Walter

Thank you. So is it possible it was awarded for several months? Or should I say, is it possible that Hans Erler recieved it in April?

Here is another, earlier pic of Wülfing with his medal bar. It seems he changed the precedence of his awards. The one behind the "Finn. Freiheitskreuz 2. Kl." on the ribbon bar above (the one with the lighter color) is in last position on his medal bar. I believe this is the Finnische Tapferkeitsmedaille.

      1925_KptzS_Wülfing_von_Ditten-2.jpg

I agree it could well be the  Finnische Tapferkeitsmedaille. In Silber right?

That would make the awards from his medal bar on this photo as following:

      -1914 EK II

      -Preußisches Dienstauszeichnungskreuz

      -China Denkmünze

      -Südwestafrika Denkmünze

-Finn. Freiheitskreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern

-Erinnerungsmedaille des "Finnischen Freiheitskrieges" 1918 mit Spange

      -Finnische Tapferkeitsmedaille in Silber

Also, no Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer on this photo because it is pre 1934.

The last ribbon could be the Grand Cross of the Spanish Order of Naval Merit with White Decoration, seen on the last photo you posted.
