Slowly but surely ... I know now he was born on 27 May 1847 at Rittergut Carwe (Karwe), Kreis Westprignitz, Regierungsbezirk Potsdam, Province of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Confederation ... I read, he died 1920 (maybe Münster or Blankenburg?), but cannot find a complete date. He joined the Kadettenkorps in Potsdam in May 1860 and was Sekondeleutnant in the Brandenburgisches Husaren-Regiment (Zietensche Husaren) Nr. 3 in 1866 (stayed there until 1891), taking part in the war of 1866 and 1870/71. No known children with his wife Hedwig Florentine Charlotte Louise Marie Freiin von Zedlitz und Neukirch aus dem Hause Pischkowitz.

There were two von Winterfeld who got the Swedish order of the Sword 2nd class commander.
Hans Carl Hugo (your guy I presume) who was adjutant for the kaiser and
Hans Carl who was oberst.
Hans Carl Hugo von Winterfeld got the award on June 2nd 1875 and
Hans Carl got it on January 21st 1914.
Thanks so much! About the Oberst: I did not find a Oberst von Winterfeld in 1914, but I did find Oberst (later Generalleutnant) Hans Karl von Winterfeldt (1862–1931) in 1914 as commander of the Braunschweigisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 92. Could that be him?

Steel on combatant ribbon should that be, for the military that stayed "at home", while members of the Freiwillige Krankenpflege out in the field received the same medal on the non-combatant ribbon. I'm not sure what's the logic behind this...
Thank you, I added that!

I found a French newspaper article (third column), but my Gymnasium French has long gone been forgotten. Does one of you Gentlemen read French? That's too bad, Herman, I was hoping for a date. NN2 can be seen for the first time in the Rangliste 1893, so maybe 1891 or 1892.
