Nice photo.
One question : your grandfather was in this unit. His uniform and the visor hat are different from the other officers.
Hi Deruelle. Yes, he was in the unit. He was the Regiment's Veterinarian.

This is an unidentified gentleman from a family album. Would anyone be able to shed light on who this may be and what the awards denote? Photo circa mid 1950s.
Some family members seem to recall him being a high-ranking Naval officer and that they believe his name was Wiedemann or Wiehman or something along those lines.

He was a bit tricky. Prior to 1902 he is listed as Roques-Maumont but following that as Eckert gen. von Roques-Maumont. He retired in 1907 and unusually as a former regular officer, his wartime service is not listed in the Ehrenrangliste. Consequently I went back to about 1895 where I found him as a Sekonde-Lieutenant in Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 123. He is listed thereafter until his retirement in the Prussian Rangliste.
I found him again in a "Stellenbesetzung" of mobile Württemberg troops in 1915 in LIR 120 and again in the Württemberg Militär-Verordnungsblatt of 1916. He falls off the radar after that.
This portrait of him as a Sekonde-Lieutenant in GR 123 in the late nineties appears on the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg site albeit wrongly named as Roques-Naumont.
Regards
Glenn
That is simply outstanding. It's brilliant information. I take it "Eckert gen. von Roques-Maumont." means his last name was Eckert, but he was called (gennant) "Roques Maumont?"
He also served, as a young officer, with General Freiherr Theodor von Watter in Regiment 123, according to an account I have.
Von Watter during the time in question (1917) commanded 13th Army Corps.
Do you have anything on a Major of Pioniere von Stockmeier or a chief of staff for von Watter named Müller-Loebnitz, late 1917, 13th Army Corps?

Thank you Glenn!! Where on earth do you find that?

He would have been a major in 1917, near Cambrai.

Thank you very much for that.

Greetings all,
I came across an individual's reference about the 4th company L 40th Regiment being detached to "Marsh Regiment Passavant", with duty in the East. This is roughly early 1916. Does anyone know what Marsh Regiment Passavant is? I have exhausted all my searches and turn to the experts for any assistance.
Thank you!

Apparently he was the Commandant of the Fortress New Breisach (Neubreisach?) when it was bombed on the night of 26-27 January?
Any information on him or the event is appreciated greatly.

Amazing and as usual very much appreciated. You sir are a master!

I am looking for any information regarding OBERSTLEUTNANT Weller, not Oberleutnant. He was a Lieutenant Colonel who briefly commanded in the Landwehr Infanterie Regiment 40 some time late 1915.

Dauter is probably the Lt.d.R. Dauter from the reserve of IR 14, who was promoted to OLt.d.R. on 14 October 1915 while serving in IR 357. IR 375 was not at Verdun; it was on the Eastern Front in 1916. Also, IR 357 is connected to IR 399, as a bataillon from IR 357 was transferred to IR 399 when that regiment was formed in September 1916.
According to the 1911 ranklist for reserve/Landwehr officers, Dauter was a Landwirt in Haseleu, Kreis Regenwalde. The 1914 Güter-Adreßbuch für die Provinz Pommern gives his first name as Johannes, and shows him as the administrator of Gut Haseleu on behalf of the Gutsbesitzer, Oberstlt.z.D. Wilhelm v. Alten. In the Prussian Verlustliste of 30 January 1915, we find a Lt.d.R. Hans Dauter, born in Münsterwalde, Marienwerder, lightly wounded with 4./Brig.Ers.Btl. 8. BrigEB 8 later became III./IR 357, so Johannes (Hans) Dauter seems to be your guy.
Simon is too common a name. I can't connect any of the various Simons to IR 357 or IR 399 or the units which formed these regiments.
That is most certainly the man! Awesome work and thank you!
Regarding IR 357, the III Btn which was rolled into the 399th did serve at Verdun. They went in, in late 1916, as part of the Gard Ersatz Division. Simon would have been Dauter's Battalion Commander, if that helps any with identifying him. Dauter commanded the 11th Company of the 399th (previously the 357th).
Also, regarding Simon, he is said to have received a "Hohenzollern Order" at some point after Verdun.

I am seeking any information on these individuals. Would have been at Verdun late 1916, in IR 399 or 375

So would the rank be similar to an American First Sergeant?

I cannot seem to find any definition of this particular term I have come across. I understand Stabs Feldwebel..but what exactly is an Etats Feldwebel? This concerns the Garde Jager in the Vosges, by the way.

Andy,
That is incredibly helpful. I found him thanks to you.

He would have most likely been a lieutenant or Kadett. He was severely wounded on the Bärenstall, in the Vosges Mountains, sometime in mid 1915.

Thanks Gunner. I contacted the World War one Museum and they deemed them nothing more than studio-props.
