    10. I thought that gunners always kept the lanyard for safety reasons. ie the lanyard was attached at the last minute. a form of safety catch perhaps? Also, it stops officers coming up and saying 'oo. whats this for?' and then pulling it out of curiosity....

    13. Actually, it was so that the 'plates' (actually trays) were easier to stack and eat off in bad weather.

    21. 'Freeze the balls of a brass monkey'. I believe this stems from the brass triangle that the 'ready' ammunition (balls) were stacked upon. When it got especially cold, the brass triangle would contract , and the neat pyramid of cannon balls would be popped out , and scatter across the deck.
