    1. One is up for auction (number unreported :banger: ) in the upcoming 22 November 2008 San Giorgio auction. As the description is only in Italian (unlike most of their items), I cannot tell whether it is screwback or pinback. Their estimate is EUR 1300-1800 (around $1666-2308), which is clearly dangerous delusional. We shall see.

    2. There may be two questions here: Made and awarded. The mint records (cited by Laslo) suggest (but do not document) the numbers manufactured. Paul's study of award certificates (I assume the original rolls/registers did not survive the war?) speaks to the numbers sctually awarded. I think the approx. 100,000 number is a good working theory.

      We're learning stuff here. Thanks!

    3. I heard that the WW1 Victory medals for Japan are among the rarest. Is this true?

True indeed. In part this is due to the fact that they are a "crossover" item, sought by both Japan collectors and Victory Medal collectors. Yet I share Kvart's sense that they are rare/uncommon in their own right. Peterson does not detail the comparative qualifications, but there seem to have been different rules in play for the two war medals vs. the victory medal. All of this, of course, has led to serious faking of this medal.

    4. I think Ed's just trying to get us to think positively. If we visualize low prices and concentrate really really hard perhaps the medal fairies will take pitty on us poor non Russians who can't afford the market value of most of these lovelies offered. I can see it now......

      EXACTLY!!

Clap if you believe in low prices.

      Righttttttt! :speechless:

What this means in terms of the economic meltdown will be interesting, even if we can't play with the Big Boys. (So what do we expect? 3X or 4X the estimates? From UK auctions I usually rely on 2.5X, but, here, odd place, bad moment, . . . ???)

    5. Ed,

Yes, as far as my knowledge goes. I have met a Sudanese Historian who has assisted me in obtaining these medals and some others which I will post sometime. According to him, these Force numbers can be researched. I will use this example as an experiment and will see what I can find out. He has a private museum in Khartoum which is very interesting, if there is interest I will ask his permission to post photographs.

      Regards,

      Will

Fascinating news. :jumping: Need to find my way to Khartoum.

    6. Reluctant to post things unknown to many here without any historical background, but fully aware that doing so will open me up to attack from those whose understanding of history is restricted to "Imperial History", let me just show an item without context. Sorry.

For the 1921-22 visit of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII). Estimated 84 medals awarded. With a short ("relic" condition) snip of ribbon, but the ribbon is rarer than the medal.
