    1. Well I am well on the way to learning as I thought the simple act of writing "Feldpost" was indicative of Feldpost marking. To respond to one of the replies as to if I can read German, the answer is No but I wish I could as I have "lots" of German related documents of which I know nothing about. Thanks again and I hope others continue to add to this topic. Regards,

    9. The following Wehrpass is in my collection that I wanted to share with those that would be interested. The information provided was based on a translation done some time ago by a member on another Military Forum. Thanks for looking Hellmuth Karl Walter M?ller Hellmuth Karl Walter M?ller from Rastatt/Baden age 19. Drafted 17.4.42, went to the western Kaukasus region with Inf.Reg. 326 of 198. Inf.Div. just to catch himself a lethal stomach shoot on 29.9.42.The 198. was subordinated to LVII Korps/17. Armee/Herresgruppe "A" at this time. Tessin gives it's location as Tuapse (Kaukasus). That theatre of operations was called "Kuban-Bridgehead" and Tuapse is a black-sea port that was under attack by the unit in question on the day M?ller died. Combat Information On 23 September 1942 at 0900 hours the autumn offensive began aganist TUAPSE under the cover name "Attika". The left flank regiment of the 125. ID, the 419. Grenadier Regiment with the subordinate I./ Grenadier Regiment 326 of the 198. ID, captured the dominant, 451 meter high Mount Lyssaya south of GORYACHIY-KLYUCH. On 24 September the attack battalion of the 198. ID set out from the area south of GORYACHIY-KLYUCH as the main stricking force. By evening the 308. GR and the 305. GR of the 198. GR in the right, the 305. GR in the center and the 326. GR on the left will attack to the Popova Ridge and capture the town of BESYMYANNOE. The 419. GR will advance into the Psekups Valley. The regiments quickly advanced and reached the foot of the Popova Ridge but the enemy stiffened. A battle flared up in the thick forested terrain, man aganist man. Assault guns supported the attack buut the terrain obstacles were insurmountable. During the evenin the 308. GR and the 305. GR stood on the Popova Ridge. The left flank regiment, the 326. GR, stalled in front of the dominant Hill 514.2. The hill was the key to the attack objective, BESYMYANNOE. On 26 September the attacks continued with support from Luftwaffee fighter-bombers. On 27 and 28 September the battle for Hill 514.2 was decided and it was captured. On 29 September Battle Group Fasel [198. ID] attacked BESYMYANNOE. The battle group consisted of three assault guns, one engineer company and one tank destroyer companie. By that evening the town was in German hands. On 30 September the 326. GR reported the capture of Mount Fonari. That covers some data regarding the 198. ID in late September 1942. The data comes from the book THE CAUCASUS AND THE OIL by Wilhelm Tieke.
