Japanese looted gold...
Schwartzvogel2008 replied to bigjarofwasps's topic in Coins & Commemorative Medallions
Highly probable, they were certainly in existance, during the war, and for a considerable time before hand, which would suggest that they could have been involved in all sorts of stuff, out there in the far east. Their own website gives the following info, to tingle the taste buds.... The HSBC Group has an international pedigree which is unique. Many of its principal companies opened for business over a century ago and they have a history which is rich in variety and achievement. The HSBC Group is named after its founding member, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, which was established in 1865 to finance the growing trade between China and Europe. Don`t think any of the Nazi banks are still in existance? The Swiss ones certainly are. -

A group of treasure hunters may have stumbled across two tonnes of Nazi gold whilst hunting for the elusive Amber Room. They have been digging in the small eastern German town Deutschneudorf on the border with the Czech Republic. The latest treasure hunters believe they may have found up to two tonnes of looted Nazi gold or silver hidden in an underground hollow spaceThe Amber Room - which was a complete chamber decoration of panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors - was a gift from Prussian king Frederik William I to Russian Tsar Peter the Great. Amber Room was dismantled by Wehrmacht soldiers near St Petersburg in 1941, but knowledge of its whereabouts was lost in the chaos at the end of the Second World War and archaeologists have been searching for it for decades. The latest treasure hunters believe they may have found up to two tonnes of looted Nazi gold or silver hidden in an underground hollow space, but not the Amber Room itself. Christian Hanisch said: "We will find this hollow space, enter it and then we'll see what we find. We might come out crying or with a big smile on our faces. Something will happen." Mr Hanisch's is using coordinates based on documents provided by his father - who was a radio operator for the German air force during World War II - to determine the location where the Nazis are said to have hidden looted gold and diamonds at the end of the war. In 2003, a reconstruction of the Amber Room was officially opened by Russian President Vladimir Putin and then German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. The Soviet Union decided to recreate the missing treasure in 1979 and some 50 experts worked on the project which was partly financed by a German gas suppliers.

30 million in fake Pound Coins!
Schwartzvogel2008 replied to bigjarofwasps's topic in Coins & Commemorative Medallions
Saw my first fake ?1 this morning, I must say it appeared very well made, it had the Britannia Bridge & was dated 2005. I think what had given it away was the fact that the Queens head was a little worn, which had exposed the base metal underneath. -

If we`re going by VC worn, then the 6 VC`s before breakfast - Lancashire Fusiliers, Gallipoli 1915, should be in there, somewhere. With being top heavy for the old Paras, Londonderry 1972, is pretty famous.... More gloriously Goosegreen, Longdon, Wirless Ridge, Tumbledown for the Scots Guards maybe, all 1982? -
2008 Silver Eagle
Schwartzvogel2008 replied to bigjarofwasps's topic in Coins & Commemorative Medallions
Don`t know what this `dealer` is basing this theory on, can`t seem to find any evidence of this on the internet, however, I did dig out the below, which might shine some light on to how the situation came about..... "More silver eagles were sold than the mint expected. That led to them running out of planchets. They buy the blanks from companies and do not make their own. The companies did not have a large enough reserve of the blanks to fill the new orders for them from the mint. As the blanks become available the mint will strike more. A blank is just that, a silver circle. A planchet is the same but has the raised rims, the mint puts on the rims then strikes the coin. They will catch up but it may take some time." -

Alex thats an interesting point. I wonder just how many `dodgey` pound coins get handed in each year. Does the government offer any sort of compensation, if so this would be a good way to launder them What about bank notes surely if your a shop keeper & end up with a ?50 or the like the Bank of England will, re emburse you? :speechless1: -

Military use of the Gold Sovereign
Schwartzvogel2008 replied to bigjarofwasps's topic in Coins & Commemorative Medallions
I wonder do the Taliban like sovereigns? I believe the Mujahids liked Krugerrands, they use to be supplied them by the CIA in the 80`s & used as trade currency with China....but of course this would never stand up in court. -

WTC Eagles seem to variey drastically in price, as to what there value is, well thats down to the collecting world, and what people are prepared to pay for them. Theres no doubting that there a piece of history. The 2001 one example seems to be the most popular, however, I believe that that the 1987 is the rarest, if thats the right word. -
