Couple of minutes ago cased 3rd class Golden Kite from Showa epoch (condition 7 out of 10) was sold in Japan for 414 200 yen. Which is approximately (without usual JapanYahoo "transaction costs") $5243. Feel the difference!!!

By rarity (only 572 silver medals of this type were issued) it even suppresses US medal of honor. But of course it isn't even near in terms of prestige. Not to mention that it was awarded not for extraodinary military merits, but for the large donations to the Coastal Defense Fund. 5000 yen and you are issued with a silver medal. 10000 yen and you've got yourself a gold one.

As far as I know there is at least one workshop in Japan that make replicas of old boxes. But this is the first time I saw modern replica for early Honor Medal ... Indeed, the market should be a small one ;)
