    1. Hello All,

This is my first posting so I hope I do not have too many mistakes with it but to get to the subject, I obtained a group of Imperial German documents all relating to a General Gustav Adolf Louis Hahn. The document that I have attached (hopefully) is dated 18 January 1900 and is signed by the Kaiser. I have been unable to find any information on a General Hahn in my searching except in a Rangelist that I have which I haven't been able to decipher. I have a total of seven (7) documents signed by the Kaiser (appear to be original signatures) also two (2) other documents, one date 27 November 1900 to Generalleutnant Hahn, Kommandeur der 9. Division, Groskreuz des Albrechtsorden and another about a 2. Armee-Inspektion dated Dresden 7 Dezember 1900. I would certainly be grateful to anyone who can help me with information on General Hahn and who can help me in translating the old german script on the documents. I can supply more scans of the other documents.

      Terry

Sorry, I'm having some trouble getting the document properly sized for attaching.

      Terry,

What level of detail of information are you looking for? For starters, Gen.Lt. Louis Hahn was, as evidenced by this award document, commander of the 9. Division (21.04.1898-18.05.1901). Prior to that, he commanded the 3rd Field artillery brigade (17.03.94-21.03.98) and Field Artillery Regiment 16 (24.03.1890-17.03.1894). He was born 27.10.1842. None of my sources list his date of death, to include Reinhard Montag's list of Generals. Odd for a Gen.Lt. that no one knows when he was called to the Grand Army!

I'd be quite interested to see the remainder of the documents- always nice to have several to an individual.

Walter Frhr. von Esebeck was born 17. July 1853 in Berlin to Karl, retired Major from the Garde F?s. R.

He was commissioned a Sek.Lt. on 16.10.1873 in the 3. Garde Ulanen R. He served as a squadron officer in the 3rd squadron from 1873-1879. After a year as the regimental adjutant (1880), he was seconded to the Embassy in Vienna for a year. Back to the regiment in 1882 (2. Esk.), then then spent two years (1883-1884) at the Milit. Reit Institute. Two more years of squardon duty awaited him upon his return. On 19.09.1888 he was promoted Rittmeister and given the 4th squardon, which he commanded until 1896 when he was attached to the Meldereiter Detachment d. Garde Korps. From 1897-1898 he was the personal adjutant of Prince Friedrich Leopold of Prussia. 1899 and 1900 he was on the staff of Drag. R. 24. In 1901 he was placed "zur Disposition behufs ?bertritt i.d. Kgl. Hofdienst m. Pension und der Uniform d. 3. Garde Ulanen R."

In 1903 he was the Vize-Ober-Stallmister.

      Above is the career.

This is one of those double sided personalized documents.

I am of the conviction that once one of these was sent, there was no lower office that would issue a "Besitzzeugnis" (Only exception we have seen to date on this was the 15th res J?g group a week or so ago, and that was just at divisional level) as in this case it would have been irrelevant.

I consider this my "Highest level" EK document....

Am not sure who signed it...

I believe that to be the signature of G.d.I. Moritz Frhr. von Lyncker, Vortr. Gen. Adj. Sr. Majest?t, Chef d. Milit. Kab., ? l.s. 1. GRzF

    4. Born in 1856 so no 1870 for him....

      Anecdote...

But it is still far from late. It is only nine o'clock and the

Duke's hospitality will not be denied. So we went to the

Europ?ischer Hof, where the Duke ordered a sumptuous cham-

pagne supper. There we stayed for several hours talking of

the wonderful things we had seen together during the last few

days, commonplace enough for him who is a soldier, but the

more exciting and unforgettable to me.

The witching hour of midnight had already struck when

we quite suddenly caught sight of the Deputy-Governor of

Metz, General von Pelkmann of the Artillery, a little man with

a grey moustache, very eccentric, with very decided views on

life, on the universe, and on the whole creation generally. In

his company was Baron von Tauchnitz. That the latter was

" Kommandeur der Kraftfahriruppen des Armeeober kommando

Falkenhausen " was not to be wondered at, for he was no

less a person than the nephew of the head of the great publish-

ing firm known throughout the Continent by its " Collection

of British Authors, Tauchnitz Edition." This chance acquaint-

ance, in itself very agreeable, had the result that I could not

resist the temptation to accompany Baron Tauchnitz on the

following morning to Blamont, where a fight was to take place

and where a French position was to be stormed.

      Chris,

His pre-war career. Not sure of his dates as Gouv. of Metz during the war.

    5. I am in the process of buying a Wehrpass and photo of a Sonderfuhrer who was with Feldeisenbahn-Betriebs Abt. 23. I have googled it to no effect. Does anyone know anything about this unit?

Paul, many many thanks dude. :jumping:

Volume 4 of Georg Tessin's series "Verb?nde und Truppen der deutschen Wehrmacht und Waffen SS 1939-1945" shows that this unit was raised on 08.05.1842 in Wehrkreis XIII (N?rnberg). It was an army level level, that in 1944, found itself in Serbia assigned to Feldeisenb. Kdo I. October 1944 moved to Belgrade and 1945 to Slavonsky Brod under Feldeisenb. Kdo 7.

Not much, but perhaps a start.

    6. Thanks Andy-- Pol-Major Schumann, original owner of my 1923, put a green pencil line through Gebauer so I misread "17" as "7." 17 it was-- imperial rank date

      Leutnant ernannt 25.03.17.

I've looked through the 1942 DAL "T" and he's not there. He's also not in the 1944 combined "T" and "S" Lists! (??????)

:Cat-Scratch: Where'd you find his first name (wretched Prussians), birth and death dates?

PS For you Iron Cross fanatics-- note the Otto Schickle-made EK2 Spange with their immediately recognizable small head/big shoulders bird and )1939( bar.

As Rick and others have pointed out countless times on this forum and others, one can never have too many sources. One of my first "modern" pick ups when I began this trek many years ago, was the four volume set (book by book as they slowly made their way on to the market) " Stellenbesetzung der deutschen Heere 1815-1939", published by Biblio Verlag in the early 1990's. These are a wealth of information, to include first names and dates of birth and death. It is a great source and one that should not be overlooked by those serious about this hobby.

    7. Ooooooooooooooogggggggggg.

Can there be anything WORSE than Sutterlin written by a southpaw? :speechless1:

      Oberstleutnant Gebauer W?nsdorf 1 October 1940.

      Wearing "P 28" which makes him 1939's

      Major 01.10.36 #65 in Panzerabwehrabteilung 28 (Breslau--28th Inf Div).

Back when I can track him backwards and forwards.

      Hans Gebauer (10.05.1898-13.12.1973)

Commander of Pz. Abtl. Abtl. 28 from 06.10.1936- at least the beginning of the war.

The 1919 Seniority list gives two Lts., one in Fu?art. R. 17 and the other in IR 46. There is also Zeug Lt. at the artilllery depot in Brandenburg. Based on this man's date of birth and the date of rank inthe seniority list I would say the Lt. in Fu?art. R. 17 is a better bet. This Lt. is also to be found in the 1923-28 Army lists in the 1. Sanit?ts Abtl. His 1924 awards are the EK2 and the wound badge in black.

    8. I'll take my second stab at this one (first one on this forum)

      How about Friedrich (Fritz) Heydenreich???

      PHOvH3mSchw 31.10.1918

Date of rank as LT 24.08.1891- so eligible for DAK roughly 1915.

I've gone through my 1914 Saxon database, added Roth's wartime saxon awards and his PHOvH3mSchw and this is the only guy who comes up.

So, let's dissect this one and see if it fits.

    9. Andy! many thanks! Yes, I had noticed that the younger and older Hildemanns were stationed in the same town at at least one time, although they were serving in different detachments, sort of the thing that a general father could probably engineer, but also a general uncle. I am finding that the Pionier=Offiziere at Gallipoli were generally well-connected and mostly knew each other, a sign that suggests that the posting to Turkey was a desired posting, not something wished on your worst enemy.

Thanks for your recent guidance to the book-dealers in Austria and Germany. When I finally got to Nuernberg, that classy dealer was closed (only opens on appointment), but I had already bought so many books that I could not carry more. I almost fell over six times at the Philadelphia airport when I returned.

Pardon my ignorance, what is "Bradley"?

      Bob

      Bob,

Always glad to help. Bradley is the author (one of many, but listed first) of Biblio Verlags multi-volume (never to be completed???) set detailing the careers of German Generals 1921-1945. That set is part of a broader effort "Deutschlands Generale und Admirale."

      Andy

    10. Bob,

I think it's a safe assumption that the Hildemanns were father and son. Bradley (Volume 5, p. 430) gives Fritz's date and place of birth as 18.05.1889 in Friedrichsort b. Kiel. My reseach on Julius' career has him in Friedrichsort from 15.07.87-22.10.89 "zur Fortifikation Dienst i. Friedrichsort v. 1. Ing. Insp." That they were both pionier officers further supports that assumptiion.

Also, Roth's "Verdienstorden and Albrechtsorden 1914-1918 (p. 202) (Band XI Statistische Ausarbeitungen zur Phaleristik Deutschlands) gives Eugen as Zipper's first name.

In Nov 1866 he married Carlotta Sthamer (not a typing/spelling error, as given in the 1913 Gotha Uradel. Handbuch, p. 504), born 1846 in Havana. They had three children, two girls and a boy. Interestingly, the two daughters were raised Catholic like their mother but not Fritz, their son. Both girls married, the eldest did not have children but the younger did, and her daughter was raised Catholic, but not her son. Not being Catholic myelf, it strikes me that just the girls were raised in the church, not the sons.

      Dear forumites,

for an article about Prussian orders on the white "Noncombatant" ribbon I would be glad to get some information about Dr. Karl Plagge.

      Best regards, Komtur.

    15. Heinrich Ritter und Edler von Kienle, born 19.08.1875, was commissioned a Sek.Lt. with a date of rank (DOR) of 27.02.1896 in the 9. IR (found in the 1897 Dienstaltersliste). That?s the same DOR as Richard Henn. I know from my records that Richard Henn was a Kriegsschule graduate, so, it?s a safe assumption that Heinrich graduated at the same time Richard did, as you point out.

Heinrich can still be found in the 1898 Dienstaltersliste, but by 1900 has disappeared and is only mentioned as Leutn. a.D. Why did he not transfer to the reserves or Landwehr? He still would have had a military commitment. Perhaps he ran afoul of the Ehrengericht???? Was he injured and mustered out as an ?Invalid?? Without consecutive Ranglisten or other sources, it?s impossible to tell. At least now that date can be narrowed to sometime between May 1898 and May 1900.

Now for Richard Henn. He was born on 07.02.1875. Upon commissioning, he joined the 5. FAR in Landau and remained with that regiment until 01.10.1901 when a new FAR, the 12th, was formed at Landau. From 1901-01.10.03 he was an Abteilung adjutant. On 01.10.1903 he entered the War Academy in Munich. Sadly, Richard died on 06.02.1906, explaining his disappearance.

So, for me the only remaining question is what happened to Heinrich to cause him to leave the army under conditions that prevented further service in either the reserves or Landwehr.

      Andy

    16. Paul is correct. There were two active duty officers in 1914 named Kurt Frhr, von Wangenheim. The gentleman descirbed in the Kube auction entry was born 27.11.1872, ten years after "Paul's" Kurt. In 1914 he was in the 3. Garde R.z.F. and like his eponimous fellow officer, had served in the colonial wars. His 1914 awards included (as found in the 1914 Rangliste) PRAO4 PKrO4mSchw PDK BrH3bmSchw MMV2.

Georg entered K?r. R 1 in 1865 and served with that regiment until 1877 when he transferred to KR 6. In 1885 he went to KR 5 and then KR 7 in 1891. Major 22.03.1889 His last assignment was as the commander of Ulan. R. 2 from 1894-1895. The pictures above are of a company grade officer and most likely show him in the uniform of either KR 1 or 6. I won't hazard a guess given my inability to distuinguish facing colors in a black and white photo. Still, the family connection is clear, though not the regimental (GKR) affiliation, at least not based on what I have found in the Stammlisten entries for Georg. (KR 1 Stammliste entry #100)

Well I am confused -- what else is new!

The gentleman in the first picture is identified, and there is no problem. The gentleman in the last picture is allegedly Kurt's father who was allegedly in the Garde-K?rassier Regiment. The uniform he is wearing in the picture does not support that thought , but rather that he is part of some other K?rassier regiment. Allegedly this guy's name was Georg Erdmann Karl Ferdinand. Who is who? Here is another picture of the older gentleman thought to be Georg Erdmann Karl Ferdinand.
