    1. The types are usually British and German although there are medals from other nations. The types of US medals vary but the majority are the modern issue type but if you look hard enough you can find the odd original issue for the right price. I actually bought a nice Purple Heart from the medal fair which has the loop suspender, not numbered but detail and finish is of a high quality. George Washington bust is well detailed and his coat of arms has been soldered into position. A nice medal.
    2. I like it as well, thats why I have waited unti l could find a good example to acquire. I have been to a medal fair today but there never seems to be a good selection of U S medals which is a shame as they are a interesting area to collect and reflect on the history of the U S Forces and the conflicts in which they have served.
    3. No, there is no name engraved.
    4. Recently acquired this MSM to add to my collection. It has the 12mm crimp brooch and makers mark for Williams and Anderson. Does anyone know as to when the 9mm brooch which is on the current US medals first appeared? This medal probably dates from the 1970's.
    5. Fantastic collection Brian, that's got my collective juices going. I'll be on the lookout for more and different whistles from now on!
    6. Great to see the more unusual Police whistles. I wonder if any members have unusual military ones? Would it be the wrong section to post foreign comparisons?
    7. Just recently added to my Whistle collection and though I'd share them with you. Left to Right: 1915 Hudson Trench Whistle. 1944 Hudson Trench Whistle with crows foot and Chain. WW2 Hudson Air Raid Precautions. 1930's Hudson Metropolitan Police Whistle No 49807 Top right, Air Ministry Whistle Bottom right, Girl Guides. All in working condition and great items to collect as they are so varied and easily obtainable.
    8. Have to agree Guys, we are guardians of other peoples medals and their family history. What I wouldn't give to get my hands on the family medals I was promised in the past but never saw? As it is I have a collection of named and numbered medals and wonder why the original owners of these ever let them go?
    9. Military Cross to Captain Ronald Hawksby Thomas, Royal Engineers. Gazetted January 1st 1917.
    10. Ruins at Kaunus, Dalyan, Turkey October 2010.
    11. Thanks for your comments guys, appreciate you taking the time to post yourt houghts on my collection. I have made some changes since the pictures were taken, just moved a few around and like you say I'll leave them as is because thats how I like them. Went to a militaira and medal show yesterday but there was a lack of US medals and came away empty handed, never mind theres always the next one.
    12. Thanks Paul, no I bought these separately from medal fairs and e-bay. i wanted to put together a small set of USAF medals as I used to work as a civilian worker at RAF Upper Heyford, England, Home of the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing F111s and Ravens (55th, 77th, 79th and 42nd ECS) and worked for the department of Environment (PSA) and Ministry of Defence (20th Civil Engineering Squadron). Happy Days, thoroughly enjoyed my time there, its a pity it closed down. I have in my collection also the US air medal and DFC and air force good conduct which I have posted pictures of in either this section or USA?
    13. Unfortunately the Airmans Medal is not named as it is a new issue. the other 3 are older issue but again no names.
    14. Thought I'd share my small USAF Medal Collection with you. Left to Right: Airmans Medal Air Force Achievement Combat Readiness (See USA section for post on maker mark for this medal) Armed Forces Reserve Air Force
    15. Picture of the medal obverse.
    16. I recently acquired a USAF Combat Readiness Medal and would like to know whom the manufacturer is please if anyone can help identify? I believe this medal dates from 1960's to 70's and has a 12mm crimped broach.
    17. Polish Pilot standing by an unrecognisable German aircraft wreck?
    18. No. 306 Polish Fighter North American Mustang.Throughout its existence, the squadron claimed 68 confirmed kills, 16½ probable and additional 26 damaged. In addition, the crews of the 306 downed 59 enemy V1 rockets It was disbanded in December 1946.
    19. No. 308 "City of Kraków" Polish Fighter Squadron Nov 1943 Mar 1945 Spitifre mark IX
    20. Picture of a B17G "Georgia Peach" 398th Bomb Group 600th, 601st, 602nd, 603rd BS: Nuthampstead. Georgia Peach was in the 601st. (More info on this plane is available from the 398th memorial webpage).
    21. Bought these pictures from a car boot fair, all original WW2 and show a downed V1 doodlebug, a Polish RAF Mustang and a Polish RAF Spitfire. There was also another picture of 2 B17F's and I have identified these as belonging to the 388th BG: 560th, 561st, 562nd, 563rd BS. One i've identified as 230212 G "Quarterback" and the other (only the tail is visible in the picture) 230177 F "Charlene" of the 562nd. Quarterback was used as one of the first radio controlled bomb planes and was lost in the north sea 6th August 44. Charlene faired a bit better and was given as a gift by Eisenhower to the Free French General M P Koening C in C French Forces in Germany and renamed Bir-Hackeim and used between 45 -49 being finally struck off and sold in 1955 to the institute of Geographique National at Criel and was probably stripped for spares? (There is a link via Quarterback to Joe Kennedy who flew from Fersfield on Operation Aphrodite).
    22. Have found out by research on the web that the number on these medals from 20000 to 70000 were issued during WW1 so I believe this would place my GC in that era.
    23. Just found that my Marine Corp Good Conduct medal is numbered 56866. Please see my other post on Good conduct medals to see picture.
    24. And to my surprise found that the Marine Corp GC was numbered 56866
