    1. Hi all:

Czechoslovakia had the Order of Klement Gottwald - for Construction of the Socialist Homeland (Ř?d Klementa Gottwalda ? Za Budov?n? Socialistick? Vlasti), which could possibly be included as an equivalent to the Order of Lenin. Good luck finding one - they are rarer than hen's teeth. Heck, most Czech orders are tough to locate.

      Cheers,

      Eric

      Let's start with a picture:)

Not quite close enough in design for me. I guess Lenin only had 1 cousin in Dimitrov:)

      Still, certainly a nice one.

    2. A number of people (incl. myself to a small extent) are not convinced that it is a fake Soyombo. If real, what would explain the Soviet screw on the suspension?

I thought nowadays all awards were produced in UB? Besides, if made in Russia, wouldn't the quality of the overall item be MUCH higher?

    3. Great thread!

I will be visiting Wolgograd for the May celebrations next year. Although I generally prefer independent travelling, in Wolgograd I am considering taking a guide for 1-2 days. Could you share any connections / websites / tips you might have on visiting Stalingrad?

I've read Beevor's Stalingrad book and am particularly interested in (a la "After the Battle") something which provides details on where to find what related to the battle.

      Thanks

    4. Below offered to me for sale (and presumably also to others). Description as from the seller.

      order of merit #1239942

      red star- 117672

      silver star- 319710

      gold star- 78182

Mongolian order of the polar star- 407

      Mongolian order of combat- 2059

Mongolian order of military merit 4489

      guards badge ww2 type

on a supposedly "Mongolian Major's uniform" with also WW2 square visored cap that matches this Victory Parade uniform set (again as per the seller).

Medals all without documents ( :( ) so no way for sure to know if it's a group.

hefty price tag... but what a find if real - thoughts?

    5. Hi, All

First, please accept my sincere apology for that questionable Soyombo. As I metioned in the private message to Bob in another forum, the seller who sold it to me insist it is a new type. But unfortunately, there is no evidence suporting his words. So I accept Bob and other friend's advice, and return it to the seller. Sorry I can't provide more pictures about it, but I will try to contact him to ask pictures. But you know, may be he can't be will to provide pictures. Anyway, I will try my best!

      Tang Si

Tang Si, mst useful wuold be to ask him why he beleives it is a genuine copy What are his supporting facts?

    6. One "neutral" (and excessively rational I admit) way to develop a potentially alternative hierarchy would be to simply look at the market prices for silver, gold, etc. and then put a $ value behind each award. In fact, would be interesting to see that:

      - official hierarchy

      - number issues

      - $ value as per metal market

      - typical "collectors" price paid in market

Above should provide already a pretty good indication... let the market do the talking (blasphemy when it comes to Soviet awards of course).

    7. And here is an oddity... number 114... in the end I didn't trust it when it was offered to me:

      - enamel didn't seem right

      - why each picture with a different background?

My suspicion was that the "good" pictures were from a different Soyombo.

    8. For general education, let's post any (suspected) fakes in here for discussion. I'll start with the Soyombo which recently popped up and will in fact add some pics of another suspected fake Soyombo a bit later as well.

This one I believe is fake because:

      - incorrect screwplate

      - incorrect "pattern" of enamel on suspension

      - poor quality / different color of enamel on main medaillion

      - overall poor crafstmanship

    9. I should probably get my self another copy as mine has seen better days too.

It's a shame 'cause it has a nice inscription from Dr.B to my brother and is numbered 45.

$59 is still not bad for the only ref. on my favourite subject!!

      JC

Actually there is one other good reference source... in fact, you're looking at it right now :P:beer:

    10. Nope, all anonymous until I found them.

Even ("Taaaaammy! Taaaaaaammy! Tammmmmmmy's in love!" theme song playing quietly in background. If you have to ask, you are Too Young. :P ) these Georgian Tamara bars turned out to be definitively identifiable SOLELY because-- of all things-- of the ADDITION of one and then a second plain blue long service ribbon.

      [attachmentid=11404]

and this guy was only a Reichs Labor Service Lieutenant Colonel...

it just comes down to being ABLE to track Imperial officers easier than any other variety.

There is, BTW, a FOURTH ribbon bar Out There to this officer:

      http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1032...ost&p=14610

and now I am hearing the theme song from the Daniel Day Lewis version of "The Last Of The Mohicans."

Excuse my ignorance... but which bar here is the Tamara one?

    11. :Cat-Scratch: Wow, I have been looking at this part forum for a while and resisting the urge to buy Mongolian, but those scans with Sukhbaatar Order are melting my deffences :jumping::love::jumping::love:

      Order of Victory

Keep on resisting - the more there is for me :P

Five years from now people will scratch their heads and say: "why didn't I buy some of those beautiful Mongolian awards when they were still remotely affordable, never mind even AVAIlABlE
