Recently acquired below "Khalkhin Gol 1939" book.
From collectrussia.com:
""Khalkin Gol, 1939" , by Uslyn Publishing House, Ulaan Baatar, 1989. In Mongolian.
Excellent photo documentary on this key battle against the Japanese, immediately preceding WW 2. Shows great number of pictures of Russian and Mongolian servicemen with close-up details of uniforms and awards, also contains color maps and recent photos of the battlefield.
Shows among other things photos of all recipients of the Title of Hero of the Soviet Union and Title of Hero of Mongolia who received the title for the Khalkin Gol Battle.
Superb reference for pre/early WW2 Soviet uniforms and gear. Scarce and out of print. "
I confirm it's a great book - just wish I could read the text:)
I'll attach some scans - first cover.

What's the price for such a C01?

Congratulations indeed! Great that we have an actual recipient of a Mongolian award amongs ourselves in this online community!
By the way, when you say "last" - do you mean the final recipient or the most recent one?
Also, out of curiosity, do people still get an award booklet?

Also know a dealer in Europe who doesn't advertise openly but had some of the things you are looking for last time I visited him. $$$ though...

sorry wrong price 25 miljon euro
Why did you buy it?
Why are you interested in selling it (although, if you expect somebody to pay 25M for it I guess that answers that question)

A useful reference point found. Don't know if it's also referring to historical statuses but it does clarify why I've already seen a few different variations of this badge above.
http://www.taom.ru/alpine/nanga/english/ap...r/statuses.html
Official sporting statuses in Russia
Mountain climbing in the former USSR and present Russia is an official sport. This means that in climbing, just like in any other kind of sports in Russia, the championships are orginized, the participants are given an official rank or classification. The rank or classification is determined by set criteria.
Sporting statuses in mountatin climbing in Russia are awarded for a certain number of ascents of a certain complexity. The following grades exist:
Alpinist Badge - junior status;
3rd class;
2nd class;
1st class;
kms (candidate to master of sports) - is given to a 1st class climber who also summited no less than 3 peaks of a 5b category and at least one peak of a 6a category (Russian classification system). For example, technically K2 North Ridge route is ranked as 5b, but because of a high altitude of difficult route sectors it has 6a category;
ms (master of sports) - is given for participation and getting points in the All-Russia Championships. Often being a Champion of Russia is not just enough to get a master of sports. The Championships are comprised of successfully completing a climb by reaching the summit without any death or severe injury occuring;
msmk (master of sports, international class) - is given individually for outstanding achievements in sports. For example, some of K2 team members got their msmk status for climbing Everest in 1992 - thay were the first Russians (but not Soviets) to summit the highest point on the planet;
distinguished master of sports of Russia - is given individually for outstanding contributions to this Russian sport. This status is more of a political nature than of a sporting nature, but is usually given to former outstanding athletes.
There is one more "status":
"snow leopard" - an unofficial status, rather then a title, which is given to a person who successfully climbs 5 of the highest peaks in the former USSR. Four of them are higher than 7,000m and the fifth, Khan-Tengri, is 6995m high.

Some interesting insight into border incidents.
By the way, Sergei - is that you who are writing a book?

Sad twist to this story - with at least a "good" ending.
Downside of "rich" collectors paying $$$ for these items...
Also - what is a "gold god"???

The "mother" of all long-service awards?
=================
Tuesday, 28 February 2006
?To strive for Mongolia? this is the oath 100 years old general took when he got state prize from the President of Mongolia. Just a few days ago he reached a hundred year. Mr. B. Tseden-Ish got Mongolian labor hero decorations ?Altan Soyombo? and Sukhbaatar. He worked for the Mongolian Army for over sixty years. In Mongolian history he is the first one who is over 100 years got this prize.

And here's what is probably depicted.
Mind you, Elbrus is well over 5.000M and the picture gives the wrong impression that it's a walk in the park. I'm sitting here at about 3.000m on the other side of the valley.
The other pic is of the summit - rather bad weather and very very cold (the weather can change very fast and dramatically on top of Elbrus and - due to the popularity and easy access - every year people get surprised on the summit with poor equipment and literally freeze to death). I was stupid enough to take my glove off out of desparation to get my camera working... fortunately still have all fingers:)

Right now only consisting of 1 piece...
But since I enjoy mountaineereing in my free time, I've decided to try to expand on this area of collecting going forward.
Attached 2 scans of a Russian alpinism badge for climbers who've reached 5.000m. It would appear that Elbrus (highest mountain in Europe) is depicted on it. Of special interest for me since a year or two ago I summited Elbrus myself.
Note that the Germans in WW2 even made it to the summit of Elbrus (look on the map: a LONG drive) and hoisted the Swastika flag on it.

Zoommmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Enjoy what you have?
That for sure! I still remember the day when I got my first SB in the mail - a very, very happy boy!
The powerful image, high quality and sheer weight of the order blew me away. I'm glad I was able to give it some brothers/sisters but I doubt they'll be getting anymore SB's to keep each other warm

Uhoh... by by (or rather: buy buy!) "cheap" SB's. I think it's now turned into a sellers market...

That represents a little over 20% appreciation year over year... buy now or by 2010 a pinback will cost you 4K USD... and I'd suspect the rate of increase on these will only be increasing so 4K is probably "conservative".
Of course, had you bought Microsoft shares back in the day and sold them now, you could have bought even MORE SB's at this moment AND have money left on the side for some other nice awards - of course, then you'd not have the fun of fondeling your SBs on rainy sunday afternoons so many years

Great group!
Hope you get the red stars researched. I have 1 red star in that small "awarded to Mongolians" range undergoing research but no luck sofar

1.000 USD is a lot to pay for a screw in my mind...
Of course, if/when research becomes possible and depending on what this will actually provide in terms of information... it may provde to be worth that difference.

Hi Ed - any chance of perhaps posting a scan of Hero of Labor 373 and 420 bio's from the book?
Those are the 2 Soyombos in my possession (no documentation unfortunately) and would be interesting to see what "hypothetically" could be the story behind these 2.
Thanks

Anything in the book's Labor Hero section with a nr 44?
Oops - I was going to point to the New Jersey website and say that it would be interesting as we'd be able to put perhaps some kind of story behind that Soyombo... but it's gone!
Somebody probably thought: better get it now before it's a 10K item!
0 -
Thanks - once I get my copy I'll be happy to have a look at the kind of data that appears to be present. If any other people are then interested in an "adopt a section for translation" initiative, I'd be happy to coordinate and consolidate and also obviously financially cover for a reasonable share of the translation. This obviously doesn't have to be a one go thing and can be spread over time.
Taking Labor Hero (probably the one with most interest: numbered awards with reasonable amount of them in collectors hands incl. some documented and actual background info on recipients in the book):
- 117 pages in total
- 10 people 12 pages per person
- 10 USD per page = 120 USD per person
I'd be more than happy to fork up 120 USD and then get in return eventually translated bios of the FULL list of Labor Heros.
Anyone willing to join, PM me.

Sorry for shooting more questions (we're all just very curious
) - does Mongolbank also maintain archives on who was awarded what, when, etc. or is that maintained elsewhere?
0 -
The downside, we all may have more unawarded orders than we realized (even on the old ones from 20's / 30's).
UB - do you know if the vaults still contain any more stock? E.g. supposed hero star?
