here is the probably rarest lifesaving medal of Imperial Germany.

The lifesaving medal Lippe-Detmold was awarded only 20 times until 1918 :-)

May I introduce this gentleman?

It is Georg Heinrich Kirchhof, born in Detmold in 1837, Oberst in IR No. 129, wearing beside the house order Lippe-Detmold 3rd class with swords
also the house order Lippe-Detmold 2nd class with swords at the ring as one out of 11, who got this award.

So the photo should be pretty rare :-)

Beautiful ribbon bar. If I am not mistaken, the award on the non combatant ribbon was the war merit cross according to the miniature chain.

Yes, but according to Rick´s rolls it was a war merit medal. That´s why I´m pretty sure, the big medalnbar still exists, because Rick must have known it.

At the miniature chain, there is also the cross of "Allgemeines Ehrenzeichen" Prussia missing, that´s why I´m not putting much trust on it.

Maybe missing items were replaced by the wrong awards (e.g. KHD cross Prussia).

Hi,

I would like to show you my latest purchase, combined with a research question.

It is the ribbonbar of Friedrich Multhaup, Fuerstlicher Bauerverwalter in Detmold (born 7th Sept. 1861 in Detmold).

It contains of

- war merit cross / war honor medal Lippe-Detmold (non-combatant-ribbon)

- golden merit cross HO Lippe-Detmold

- Leopold-order Lippe-Detmold merit cross

- silver merit cross HO Lippe-Detmold

- cross of Allgmeines Ehrenzeichen Prussia

- long service medal Prussia

- Combatants-club cross Lippe-Detmold

- 1897-medal Lippe-Detmold

- 1905- medal Lippe-Detmold

The combination is quite unique and unfortunately the mini-chain of Friedrich Multhaup was sold separately.

My dear friend Rick knew the big medalbar of F.Multhaup for sure...does anyone else know, in which collection the big medalbar actually is?

Here is one from Lippe-Detmold, belonging to a small group of a brave soldier, who got several times wounded...

Would that appear in the Hof- und Staaatshandbücher? At least by the individual people who had it rather than a Roll?

Difficult to say...I had the complete archive-file of this batch in my hands...it was just a MESS ! A lot of lists with names, partly crossed, partly awardlists, partly only suggestions.

I know two guys, who are planning to create the rolls, but I seriously warned them, due to the chaotic file.

Even my dear friend Reiner Schwark just guessed the number of awards...

Can anyone confirm the class of award for Johannes Lutze? His personnel file says he received the "Ehrenkr. IV.Kl. 1.Abt. m.S. d. Lipp.Hausordens" on 10. November 1918. This would appear to be the LDH4aX. But Lutze was a Lt. in IR 54, previously in RIR 267, when the award was made. As a Leutnant, wouldn't he have received more likely the LDH4bX? He previously received the Lippisches KVK on 4.3.18.

Hi Dave,

the LDH4bX is the civil honour cross, so a LDH4aX makes much more sense. It is quite interesting, that he also got the KVK quite late.

Thank you...I´m already down at around 35 candidates (I erased all Lakai and guys, which were born after 1847 plus the guys from Lippe-Detmold).

In addition I cancelled awards after 1905, because the silver merit medal is definitely an early award made by Büsch and the early thick medal type.

But still more than one potential candidate left (So far I skipped the guys, whch didn´t appear with their first name in the rolls):

Phillip Krug (two entries with the same name in the EK-list)

Friedrich Luchte

and my favorite Gustav Meier (Sek. Lieutnant Jaeger Bat. No. 9).

But none of them I was able to find in the Almanach 1904-1905...so either they died before or none of them was the former owner.

It remains tricky...

The last medal is the Detmold 1905 Lawsuit Medal-- the "Thronanspruch" court case that Detmold won over the succession fight with Schaumburg since 1897.

He's on that medal's roll as Gerichtsassessor in Lage.

I had NO idea he was a St. Henry winner or Saxon officer. GREAT thread!!!

Ah...then I have to talk to Daniel...Is the list for the cross for heroic deeds already done? I still have the plan to digitalize it (the 1st project with higher priority), although it is going to be tough.

I don´t know, if it is really paying to have list of theawards post 1918, because most of the awards (especially the house order) were politically motivated.

I checked the statutes and my assumption was correct...for honorable, long-time members of one of Detmold´s veteran-club.
The cross had to be returned after death and was awarded only 226 times.

It is a good one without doubts. Schwark shows exactly your type in his book, too and if you search within this topic, you will find an example with chiffre LA backwards.

The cross is an older one, made by Carl Büsch, Hannover. The enameled center of the rose is the clear evidence.

Is it a golden or silver gilden cross? And do you have a name of the former owner?

For sure the owner must have been a honourable member of a local Detmolder "Kriegerverein" (veteran´s club).

Once I will have access to Schwark´s book I can translate the important requirements stated in the statutes, if you wish.
