Hi Matt,
A very pleasant ribbon bar. About the golden swords, they were used for second and first class. I think, and it's only my opinion, that your man received the second class. There is no other Saxon awards. He probably finished the war with the grade of Leutnant of Oberleutnant. He has never served in the Reichswehr (no long service ribbon). So he was recalled during WW2 and probably served behind the front like he has no claps on his iron cross 2nd cl.
Christophe
Many thanks for your analysis Christophe.

Thank you Gentlemen for sharing your opinions and expertise.
I have learnt something from this discussion and I hope others reading it have also.
I am glad I was lucky enough to dodged the bullet on this one.
Best wishes and thanks,
Matt

Thank you Daniel for explaining the bow.
Paul unfortunately these are the only photos, taken from eBay.
Gentlemen, what is doubtful about the ribbon bar? Is it the combination (there does seem to be a lot of blue ribbons)? The lack of devices perhaps?
As I stated before I had a bid on this bar....maybe it is a good thing I lost this auction chaps?

i'm more inclined to the combatant persuasion....
what is the 4th award? does it shed any light on
his possible status?

Joe,
The fourth medal is for the Commemoration of the Winter War (Finland).

Hello Detlef,
The second medal is the Prussian War Aid Cross and I think that is why you ask if this very nice medal bar belonged to a non-combatant?
I do not believe that this medal was just restricted to non-combatants though a number did receive them. Combatants could have been awarded this medal I am sure. Fieldmarshall von Hindenburg himself got one.
I would think that with a bravery medal from Finland that this chap was a fighter.

I know absolutly nothing about Austrian Orders & Medals, so please excuse my ignorance. Did Austria have anything comparable to the Hindenburg Cross following the First World War? How about Hungary?
Yes there were commemorative medals for both countries. They are represented on this medal bar photo I found on the internet. The order is as follows:
-Iron Cross 2nd Class
-German Honour Cross 1914-1918
-Austrian Commemorative Medal 1914-1918
-Hungarian Commemorative Medal 1914-1918
I hope that answers your question.

Saw that interresting group before; pitty it got split up.
I wish RR was still here to interpret it. I tend to think it might well be an officer's bar, as there is no long service award on it. An EM/NCO would get it for nine years of service, and war service counts twice. So a EM/NCO who possibly served before WW1 his usual two or three years of service and then served some years of WW1, would have gotten it - while a officer needed 25 years! An officer is more liely. None of these awards was limited to a certain rank, so no intention here.
I'm having a ribon bar for years, that is that close, I have doubts it is someone else's. The WW1 awards almost match, the non-official were not allowed to be worn. Just one different ribbon, that might be a mistake...
If you agree and want to re-unite at least these, please PM me. It's not a bar I cannot give away.
Hello Saschaw,
Thank you for your interpretation. That is a good point about the long service award for officers only after 25 years. This could be an Officer's group.
Very nice ribbon bar.
Interesting that there is a wreath on the Saxon War Merit ribbon.
Thank you for your good wishes Irish Gunnar.

Gentlemen,
This little ribbon bar has been split up from the medal bar and miniature chain (eBay photos below).
I would love to reunite them in my collection. But for now they are united here on GMIC.
I find this an interesting grouping. It is possible that this is not an Officer's ribbon bar as all of these awards could have been awarded to the lower ranks. Am I correct in saying that?
What sort of person/rank could have worn this ribbon bar?
Thank you
Matt

Richarddwh,
This is not a Saxon ribbon I can find in my book.
Did you get a chance to do the UV test?

Hi Mike,
I would like to see a reverse pic of the bar and some more details on pos. 1 and 2.
It looks to me like the 1st 2 awards are different sewn on than the others. Too far away from each other as if there has been a 3rd dec. betwee nthe IC and the RAO ribbon.
Greetings
Daniel
Daniel could be right. Perhaps the Hohenzollern House Order (HOH3X) was in position two as it is on the ribbon bar? I think this may have already been hinted by others already.
Mike, that was a very nice gift to get.
Both the ribbon and medal bar are fantasitic. I particularly like the Princely Hohenzollern Order ribbon device.

Hi Matt,
I think, that it is the war ribbon of the Order of the Star of Romania.

Uwe
Thank you Uwe...my curiosity has been satisfied!
I assume this chap wore these foreign medals in the order they were awarded to him as there is a Bulgarian Order in the middle of all the Romanian awards!
It is a shame this bar has already been sold...i would really have liked it in the collection!

Hi,
I would like to know what you think about this medal and, specially, the Prague Castle Bar.
Sorry, but these are the only pictures available.
Thanks in advance,
Douglas
Hello Douglas,
From the photos the medal and Prague Bar look good to me. I am no authority on the case though.
I would like to see a close-up of the ribbon bar if possible.
If you can get close-ups of the entire group that would be very beneficial.

Saxe-Weimar Ribbon Bar
in Germany: Imperial: The Orders, Decorations and Medals of The Imperial German States
Posted
Thank you for posting Christophe.
The ribbon bar worn by the Luftwaffe Oberst in this photograph is definitely a dam good match to the ribbon bar I have in the collection. Very good news chaps that an ID is a possibility. ![](https://gmic.co.uk/uploads/default_beer.gif)
