    1. Hi all,

I tried posting this in the valuation section but so far no replies. I need a rough idea of (if any) value on this piece. It's been sitting in a box and I thought if anyone else would be interested and could make better use of it and I could get a bit for it it would help us both. I'm also open to trades. I'd love to post it in the sales section but no idea what (if anything) it's worth.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

And by the way... this is how I got it... no idea why the base for the badge was cut off. :banger:

    2. Hi all,

I about lost my cookies tonight. Was surfing Ebay and lo and behold I find a listing for a "Mint Gorgeous REPRO. Russian Naval Officers Dagger :speechless: :

Thankfully different enough that anyone who has seen or handled real ones will know the difference in an instant. But as for newbie collectors or those who haven't had the chance to see or hold a real one... :banger:

Next they'll be faking Lenin Centennial medals for crying out loud!

      Sigh.

      Dan

    3. Hi all,

Many thanks to Dave and slava1stclass for those terrific pics!!!! :jumping::jumping: Geez... it still seems sooooooo odd seeing guys in U.S. uniform... especially an MOH awardee, wearing Soviet awards... especially the OGPW as the H&S is soooo prominent in the design. And with all the post war red scares and all... just gives me the shivers. Don't get me wrong... I think it's neat and very cool that they were awarded to our guys and that they (at least for a time) were able to wear them. But just seems like a situation out of the Twilight Zone or something whenever I try to wrap my mind about it.

I guess that's one of the best things about this thread, is getting to learn and see about more such examples than just Patton. What would be even better would be being able to acquire and own a piece or group that had been awarded to a U.S. serviceman. To me that would be a real prize!

Again thanks so much to all for adding so much to this thread. Hope it keeps going for quite some time and that alot more is uncovered and discovered along the way.

      Dan

    4. Hi Takc,

Somehow WOW seems very inadequate here. :speechless1: A lovely piece! I've actually seen one other which was similar but I don't remember it having the engraved blade or the oakleaves on the scabbard fittings. But it did have the engraved plate and the red star and came cased in a very nice wood case which also had a matching presentation plaque on it.

Simply breathtaking! :jumping::jumping::jumping: You're a lucky man! Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

And by all means... to echo Richie... if you have additional history you're able to present on this one I hope you'll do so. :D

      Dan

    5. I have actually seen a certificate for a Guards badge to an individual US soldier. Unfortunately since that hasn't been within the scope of my research, I haven't concentrated on that, nor do I know where in the tens of thousands of jpgs on my two hdds that pic might be! :speechless: My theory, from what I've seen from US veterans, is that they were individually awarded the Guards badge, and not awarded en masse to an entire unit. I've never seen any documentation to support that, but we're all still learning. Below is a picture of BGen Woolfley, who was the 76th Infantry Division, wearing his one Soviet award, the Guards badge.

      Dave

      Hi Dave,

Very cool! :jumping::jumping: I wonder how long such awardees went on wearing these before quietly putting them away in a drawer somewhere. Plus, unless they'd gotten the screwbacks replaced with pins or something I'm assuming that whatever tunic they'd worn it on had to be retired and a new one purchased due to the screwback hole. ;)

Gents... this is getting really good and with the above is rising above my hopes for this thread. I'd rather hoped it wouldn't be limited to Patton but would indeed pull some pics and other info on other U.S. recipients of Soviet awards, badges, etc., out of the woodwork. And learning more about those that Patton was awarded is terrific! :jumping:

Keep up the great work as I for one an thoroughly enjoying this one!

    6. Hi all,

Here's something I've only seen once and I grabbed it... just couldn't resist. It's the core of an Imperial IC 2nd. It's magnetic and a neat piece. Only problem is that someone along the line painted it silver... or at least some of it. :banger::speechless:

I've been sorely tempted to try and remove the paint but as always with such things I don't take that lightly. Probably can't hurt at this stage with it being just the core with no frame, etc.

Anyhow just thought I'd pop it up in case someone might be intro'd in seeing it.

      Dan

    7. Okay, this one has some damage to the frame. Not sure what caused it as it's just like I got it. I used to pic up IC's whenever I could for $30 and less. Used to get quite a few for around the $7 to $15 range. Sorry to say those days are loooooong gone! :( Anyhow it looks as if it got yanked down when being worn at some point. But you can see the way it's damaged the ring area, top of the frame and how the upper parts of the frame have separated.

    8. Hi all,

Can't believe I hadn't posted these yet. But did a search and couldn't find them so did up some scans and here they are. I used to have quite a few more but this is what I'm down to in Imp. 2nd's.

This ones fairly normal and run of the mill. Can't find any marks on the ring, etc., although my eyes have proven to not be the greatest for some time. I keep missing marks and then discovering them when I do scans. But can't see any on this one.

    9. Hi all,

Great collections! Richie, especially love the last cap star you posted... beautiful!!!!:jumping::jumping:

      Here's my humble contribution:

      And the original thread:

      http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=7389...hl=subway+medal

I've always loved trains, subways and such and hope to add more from these areas to my collection at some point down the road.

Thanks for sharing some awesome pieces! Dave, that uniform is fantastic!!!! :jumping::jumping: Can't wait to see more on that display/grouping.

      Dan

    10. Hi all,

I'm so happy that this thread has been of interest. I for one never knew about the award of the Guards Badge... although I did know about him being given the Kutuzov. Patton has always been one of my heroes and I'm always up for learning new info about him.

Thanks so much to everyone who has participated so far. Sure hope we can learn a few more tidbits before all is said and done. :jumping::jumping:

      Dan

    11. Dan,

Great picture of Patton!!! I, too, am surprised because of his feelings about the soviets. But, then he did love his Orders and medals!!!

      Doc

      Hi Doc,

Many thanks. I've read Ladislas Ferago's Patton and several other excellent bio's and seen quite a few as well... but don't remember reading anything specific about these awards or how he felt about them. Would love to know if anyone out there happens to have any info on this. Can't quite tell from the pic if he looks pleased or unhappy... perhaps kind of between the two extremes. But again, can't find another photo showing either or both of these awards. Tons of others... but not these.

      Dan

    12. Hi all,

Found this shot on the web... no idea who to credit it to. But couldn't resist as it not only shows his Order of Kutuzov but also one I didn't previously know he'd gotten... a Soviet Guards Badge.

I searched for about two hours last night and could not find another shot of him wearing these awards. Knowing how he felt about the Soviets I'd not be surprised if he promptly packed them away and never wore them or even looked at them again.

You can see what I believe is the Order of Kutuzov just to the left of the Guards Badge.

If anyone has additional pics of him wearing either or both of these please post as I'd love to see them.

      Thanks,

      Dan

    13. I forgot about this, it's a French fuze for a 75 I think.

I bought it in France and was told it would have been used as an egg cup, for quail eggs. I use it as a candle holder but the wax makes a mess when it melts and flows through the holes.

The Lebel bullet is for size comparison.

      Hi Tony,

Wow! That's a beauty!!!!:love: I've always wanted one of the timer shells from the period but they all seem to pop up across the pond and the shipping ends up being too high. Our museum has one that is the one that made me fall in love with them. But never seen one done up like this. Great piece!!!! Thanks so much for sharing!
