    1. Dan, The French flag has already been posted as N? 19. It is in Poruguese and has no indication of the printer it says: "As bandeiras francezas, - A bandeira do 51? regimento da linha. I guess it needs no translation. If you need details please let me know.

      Eduardo

      Hi Eduardo,

Sorry bout that... my brain has been steadily melting down all week. Sure hope things start to kick into gear soon. I'm feeling much better on some levels but brain wise is not one of them. Everything seems to overwhelm me and that's not normal for me.

      Dan

    2. Hello Dan,

I have four rolls of film I still haven't developed. I think I'll wait because I'm afraid of what might be on them. I think they were all taken in port while we were drinking. I dug out some of my stuff. :P

      thanks,

      barry

      Hi Barry,

Very cool! :jumping::jumping: Hey, any chance of a closer shot of the wings? Great looking group. Many thanks for sharing those.

      Dan

    3. Hi Torsten!

It is great to see you here!!! Do you have any other photos from you time in the service? You are the only DDR veteran I have known. I would love to hear about some of your experiences. What was your career field? Infantry? What rank did you obtain?

      Paul

Hear hear! :jumping::jumping::jumping::jumping: Torsten, I know we've chatted a bit about such things but I knew many others would be equally curious. This is a fascinating subject. Thanks for asking Paul.

      Dan

    4. That was on my first cruise to the gulf. When I did my second I was able to have some fun.

I think I'll edit the picture so it doesn't end up in the tabloids.

      thanks,

      barry

      Hi Barry,

Hee hee... yeah, that might be wise! One never knows what those paparazzi might grab hold of. Glad you were able to be on the other end of things during your time in. So do you still have your certificate and such? As for me, I only cruised around in the Gulf of Mexico between Pensacola Florida and Corpus Christi Texas shooting off pilots in training for their carrier take offs and landings. Those poor Ensign's really got a workout I'll tell you. But so did we as we had to learn just about every department on the ship. But it was a blast and an experience I'd not trade for anything in the world. :jumping::jumping:

Guessing I'll have to scan some of my pics of that cruise and such one of these days if anyone would be intro'd in seeing them. She's a museum ship down in Corpus Christi now and I hope and pray we're able to go down and spend some time on her. My family has heard these tales for years but I want them to actually see where it all took place and why I fell in love with the old girl. She's a beauty and I'm soooo glad they saved her for posterity.

      Dan

    5. Hello Dan,

Here is a funny picture while crossing the equator. I'm wearing the underwear on the left and on the right is Mr. Hunter Ellis. He is on the History Channel.

      thanks,

      barry

      Hi Barry,

Very cool! :jumping::jumping: That's quite a ceremony, getting to meet with King Neptune and his Royal family. :cheeky: Definitely a memory to be treasured for a lifetime.

So... did you ever end up on the other end of the stick? :P Am sure that's so much more fun than the other way around.

      Dan

    6. I do hope that I am allowed to post links to another forum here?...but it would really safe a lot of time and hassle, if you were to have a look at this thread on another forum, where I have shown a fairly large number of different Stasi Undercover Pins...Cheers, Torsten.

      Hi Torsten,

Far as I know there are no such restrictions here like on many other forums. We're all here to learn and to share info so this fits right in. Only problem is that members like myself who have not joined WAF cannot see the pictures in the post. :(

But very much appreciate your posting this and I know at least some of us will be able to see the pics as well. But alot can still be learned from the thread.

      Thanks,

    7. Hello,

I spent four years floating on aircraft carriers(Carl Vinson, Nimitz and Abraham Lincoln). I was one of the morons that armed up the F-14 & F-18 on the cats before take off. Night Time was the worst with the steam and engines turning. I came close a few times of being sucked up in one of those things. The F-14 was the worst going up the belly next to those huge engines.

      Nice Find....

      thanks,

      barry

      Hi Barry,

Many thanks! And also, and most importantly... thank you for your service! Even with the dangers involved I envy you. I was on the Lexington for a cruise and it was one of the high points of my life. I so wanted to serve as an officer in carriers. But you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Long story short I was involved in a hit and run during break from college and ended up with a concussion, back and neck injuries that basically put the kybosh on my career plans. All because a teen who'd just graduated decided to drink some beer and "borrow" his mom's car. But I still love the service, especially the navy and live the life vicariously through my hobby, my studies and tons of documentaries and such.

Just met up with a gentleman today who works for the local power company who was out to advise us on different heating systems. Turns out he was on the Lady Lex when I was on my cruise! He was a green shirt up on the flight deck. I showed him my pics and a few pieces I still have from my trip and we shared some memories. It was great. He's the first vet from the Lex I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

So as someone who served and lived at least some of the life I wanted... I salute you!

      Dan

    8. Dan, I have only one left of the parade and i'll post it now. If you want I could do an enlargement of the flags part of the previous card. The last postcard of the parade showws the British troops.

      Hi Eduardo,

That would be great if not too much trouble. I'd not want to put you out. But if you have the time and wouldn't mind, and assuming the flags show up clear enough to show a bit more detail that would be fantastic.

      Thanks much!

      Dan

    9. Yes I was referring to German.Militaria (Torsten) as having served in the NVA.

Sorry for not noticing the confusion sooner, but I have been caught up in "The Devaluing of the Hero of Russia." I sure stirred up a hornets nest over there. :o

      Jon.

      Hi Jon,

Not a problem! I haven't taken a look at the "Devaluing" thread for a bit... looks like I'll have to wander over there and take another look. :jumping::jumping:

      Thanks,

    10. American flags by the Arc de Triomphe.

      Hi Eduardo,

Great shots with flags. Just wish the flags were bigger as I have a friend who loves to see them in all their glory... and the finials as well. If you have more with such please post them as I too love those. He got me re-hooked on flags, banners, etc. and finials. I always try to let him know whenever I see some good pics or film footage of such being displayed. :jumping::jumping:

Simply a spectacular collection you have! I just can't get enough of them. It's like an archive of the war. Outstanding!

      Please keep em' coming! :jumping:

      Dan

    11. I am sure that there will be a pic of the man somewhere, but I would not know where to look right now...lets see what I can find...or maybe someone else can help?? Cheers, Torsten.

      Hi Torsten,

Mucho thanks! And no rush... just something I'd eventually like to display with the doc. A shame it would probably be near impossible to find a pic of the recipient out there as that would be ultra cool! But talk about finding a needle in a haystack. :cheeky:

      Have a great one!

      Dan

    12. Hi Dan, I believe that Jon was referring to the person that sold you the 1955 certificate...i.e. ME... (some nice smilies on this forum... :jumping: ) ... anyhow, I am glad that you have got the cert now and that you like it...keep checking my auctions...I am sure that I will have more in the future...anyhow, re your question about who signed the cert, that was Fritz Eikemeier, who was Polizeipresident of Berlin from 1953 to 1964 and lived from 1908 to 1985....hope this helps? Good luck with the rest of your collection... Cheers, Torsten.

      Hi Torsten,

Hello my friend. Glad to see you've come aboard! :jumping::jumping: Wecome!!!!

On the NVA part, that's very true of course. Thought he was talking about the certificate. We'll chalk it up to the deranged mind of a cold/flu victim.

Any chance of getting a pic of Herr Eikemeier? I did a quick Google search and although it came up with a couple of things, no pics.

Many thanks for this info on the certificate and I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your future auctions for more. Just have to get my warchest built up a bit.

      Have a great one!

      Dan

    13. The Cenothaphe in honor of the dead..

      Hi Eduardo,

Another great piece. Sorry I've been out of the loop for a few days but I've been rather under the weather. Hoping tomorrow and over the weekend I'll be able to get more caught up on things. Went through and made a bunch of replies to posts this evening but getting ready to go relax a bit as I'm still not 100%.

Just out of curiosity, how do you display all these? It's a rather large collection. Do you use albums or have them in frames or what? I have another friend who collects postcards of stars of yesteryear and he keeps alot of his in something similar to rolodex holders where they can be flipped around and you can see a ton of them on each display holder.

I have a German postcard collection that runs from WWII through the post war years. Mostly just scenic cards from members of the same family during that time period but all bought as a group and kept that way by me ever since. But so far they're just kept in a box awaiting better display.

      Dan

    14. Now that is an interesting piece!

      Hi Paul,

Many thanks my friend! Sorry it's taken me so long to respond but been snowed under at work, gotten pulled into various projects around here plus got sick this last week so just starting to feel a bit more like my normal self. So trying to get things caught up.

I've only seen a couple of these over time but know they do pop up on occassion. Also I've seen presentation pieces from Admirals and Generals including those given to each other from their foreign counterparts, etc. Quite a bit of that sort of thing shows up on Ebay and generally such things are well made due to the rank and/or position of those both on the giving and receiving end of such things.

Generally they come on the market when the recipient passes away and their estates are sold off. Sometimes you can make a real find.

      Dan

    15. Dan,

I've built the Tauro model that David mentions--it's an excellent kit, about 10 inches long, with a complete interior also. Great detail for the era in which the model was introduced (early 1990s), so I highly recommend it. I purchased it from Squadron Mail Order (squadron.com) in Texas.

      Gaffken

      Hi Gaffken,

Many thanks for the additional info. I'll definitely have to get at least one of these.

      Thanks so much!

      Dan

    16. Dan,

An Italian company called Tauro Model offers a 1/35 scale kit of the A7V and Emhar does some of the British tanks in the same scale. Emhar also offers a kit of the A7V in 1/72. I have an unmade 1/72 scale resin model of the A7V sold by a company called Fine Scale Factory. The H?ndler/Traders-Info link on their site at http://www.finescalefactory.de includes an address for a dealer in the USA.

I have seen scratch-built models made of wood and metal of various WW1 tanks in 1/16 scale at a local exhibition. They were very impressive and would probably not be difficult to make with a decent set of drawings.

      David

      Hi David,

Many thanks for this info. I'll try to locate one of these as I've wanted an example (if not several... I'm being inspired by all these photos of the various named examples) of these for ages!

      Dan
