    1. Dan,

It looks like a WWI wound badge. But I quess it is actually a post-war or 57er. Darrell posted information after me. So much for my first try at trying to contribute something meaningful from my limited knowledge.

      Dean

      Hi Dean,

Hey, don't beat yourself up. I'm glad to see you jump in. You tried... that's alot more than most people do in the world today.beer.gif I'll PM you once I get back from work this morning and send over some examples showing the differences between the different WB's to help you out. They're really distinctive once you know what to look for.biggrin.gif

Never forgot... we NEVER stop learning. I've also jumped in before and not been right. C'est la vie!laugh.gif It happens. But then I learn from the experience and move on. I'm 47 and still learning and hope never to stop. I'm not an expert in any one area but I think I've been able to hold my own for the most part and occassionally help out others. And hey, that's what we're all about here... helping each other, sharing our knowledge and experiences and all becoming better for it along the way.

Anyhow gotta run for now but nice try and I for one deeply appreciate the effort. Please don't hesitate to jump in... and NEVER EVER hesitate to ask questions. There's no such thing as a foolish question. It's how we all learn.jumping.gif

Keep on truckin' and it'll get easier... I promise!beer.gif

    2. Hi all,

My newest arrival... actually waiting for the stork but shouldn't be long. But not quite sure where to place this one. Not sure if it's an extremely well denazified TR one or if it's an early 57.unsure.gif Also not positive if it was originally a black or a silver. Appears it's a zinker which has absorbed the color. I can't see traces of any... at least on the photos. But noted that the base of the catch/hook is silver in color. I'm not positive but I'd think that to be odd on a black one but not on a silver.

So opinions extremely welcome on this one.

Also, I know it's not possible to make out in the pics but the maker is L/58 which I believe is Rudolf Souval but please correct me if I have this wrong.blush.gif

      Thanks!!!!beer.gif

    3. Don't give up total hope yet. I'd definitely prefer to see one of our more expert members like Rick Research pop on and give their opinions. Like I said I'm kind of stepping out on a limb on this one. I pray I'm wrong but just had to give my gut feeling.

Out of curiosity, is this one you own or one you're looking to buy? Hoping if you own it you don't have much in it in case it is confirmed as a fake beyond a doubt. Trust me, we've all been burned over time, myself included. But always much easier to take when it was not a large amount. Plus, you just have to take it as a learning experience. Over time you'll know precisely what to keep an eye out for.beer.gif

    4. Hi Dean,

I'm far from an expert on these but I'm going to go out on a limb and say I don't like it. The ribbons look far too new, the pin clasp on the back looks like the many Ohio parts bars I've seen examples of in the past. There are extremely few... I think only a couple or so, confirmed original SS bars. If you check this link (by our own Richard Lundstrom (Rick Research) it shows an original SS miniature along with examples of fakes. From what I can see in your picture I think I see some pitting and uneveness in the lines as well as a lack of the cleft between the runes.

      http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/related/ribbons/device_gallery/ss_runes/ss_runes.htm

Have you checked this bar with a UV (ultra-violet) light? It's not a sure thing but it's often an indication of fakes if the material glows.

Check the pin clasp... see if you can see any marks like pencil lines. If so that's a sure sign of an Ohio parts bar.

I'm sure if Rick sees this he'll hit the nail on the head and confirm it one way or the other for sure.

Hope I'm wrong but again I just don't like the look of it. If I saw it for sale as a fake for cheap I'd pick it up just as a space filler or for parts but that's about it.

    5. I'm a bit Rommel/Patton fan and don't apologize for it. As far as the beaches Rommel was hog tied by Hitler holding back the panzers and insisting that Normandy was only a feint and the real invasion was coming at the Pas de Calais. Plus Rommen was not in total command... that was Von Runstedt again under the Bohemian Corporal and he was also limited. Rommel felt the only way to defeat the invasion was to stop them on the beaches as once they got inland the game was basically over.

But I also feel that GFM Albert Kesselring is often overlooked as one of the greatest commanders of the war. He worked wonders in Italy.

      Just my two pfennigs.beer.gif

    6. Although you probably found this too if not I hope it helps. These are the books she's published:

      http://web.me.com/emiliestewart/emilie/Books_by_Emilie_Caldwell_Stewart.html

And her site to email her:

      http://web.me.com/emiliestewart/emilie/Welcome.html

Not sure exactly how similar they are. I do know her books occassionally show up on Ebay, etc. I found this on Amazon.com:

      http://www.amazon.com/Emilie-Caldwell-Stewart/e/B002VJPFVC

They also turn up in library collections. I'd suggest you try checking with your local librarian and see if they can find copies of any/all of these in the system and get them for you via the interlibrary loan system. Might be the best and cheapest way to get hold of some or all of them. I luckily purchased the one on Wehrpasses and Soldbuchs from her many many moons ago when it first came out. I only wish I'd purchased the rest of them.

I wish she'd consider the possibility of scanning copies (I'm assuming she kept a full set for herself) and putting them onto disc for purchase. It would be an inexpensive way for her to continue to make money on her works and would allow the rest of the collector community to have access to them.

      Good luck!beer.gif

    7. I think this is an excellent idea and hope that it's either been done or can be. I took German back in college along with a lifetime of watching Hogan's Heroes, war movies/series, etc., so picked up bits and pieces from those as well. I'm not at all fluent as I had no one to converse with (oh if we'd had the web back then!rolleyes.gif ) and only wish I was as I'd then be happy to help out.

But not only with German docs (from both wars) but Soviet and those of the other Warsaw Pac countries I've always wondered about what the documents say as far as the printed sections. I used to ask folks who spoke Russian about Soviet docs... they'd give me the basics about what was written but when I asked about the printed things it was like "Oh that's just the usual stuff printed in such docs.", etc. And of course that didn't teach me anything or make me understand things any better.

I thanked God when Emily Caldwell Stewart came out with books on this subject as otherwise I was flying blind. But I'd love to see even more out there.beer.gif

    8. Hello Hauptman,

I think its a copy of Police Badge for visor hat 2nd Model. Last week Detlev Niemann had the same badge on offer. It was a pressing, on the reverse you could see all the badge detail. This one is a casting with almost no detail on the reverse. Sorry

      Hi Alec,

Many thanks for the confirmation. Not to worry as it was a gift. This was the one I was most concerned about... very detailed on the front but the back just didn't look right to me. The bells were going off so this is what I expected.

This only leaves the SS cap eagle to be confirmed one way or the other. It's the only other one I wasn't sure on... not that anything looks odd to me or anything but I've always been extremely skittish about SS items as they seem to have been faked more than most over the years.

Hoping someone will let me know on that one. But the naval eagle and especially the screwback wound badge being original made me extremely happy!jumping.gifjumping.gif In comparison this and the cap eagle are minor... especially in comparison to the screwback wound.

      Thanks again! Happy New Year!beer.gif

    9. Hi Iver,

Great case!jumping.gifjumping.giflove.giflove.gif I LOVE cases myself and drive my wife Kim crazy as I'm always on the hunt for them. I even occassionally find cases for things other than awards that I can convert to using for them. I've always thought awards, daggers, etc., look so much better being display in presentation cases. Plus whenever needed they work best for keeping such items protected.

A great case, super medals and a wonderful display together! Great find! Congratulations!!!!beer.gif
