    1. Dear Dan,

      no problem .....

Sorry, I forgot to congratulate to your recent great victory at Christophe's quiz - you are now our "shooting star".

So, we have to look in Stalin's biography for a non-Russian playwriter, communist, who helped the Voshd a lot in his early years.

      Best regards,

      Christian

      Hi Christian,

Many thanks my friend! Wow, a shooting "star" you say... guess I definitely fit into Soviet collecting then. :cheeky:

And yes... although not sure how much play it may or may not have had in his bio's but I'd certainly hope it was mentioned. It's out on the web at the very least.

Hope I didn't come up with one that's too hard. I'd definitely want someone to get it... but definitely want some thrill in the chase. :P

In fact... not even sure what happens if a question can't be answered. Ya'll will have to fill me in on that should the occassion arrise.

      Best of luck!!!!

      D

    2. Dan,

I'm really happy you won the last one.

If I was the winner, it would have been only thanks to hints found by others, and I would have felt a little "embarassed" of this victory.

Charles and Dan, good job!! :jumping:

Cheers, and back to Dan's question.

      Ch.

      Hi Christophe,

Many thanks! I know everyone went nuts with this one... because I did too! :P But that's a good thing because I'm sure, like I did, we've all learned new things in the process. It's just like my current question... this is someone I did not know about till researching Charle's question. We're all so familiar with the big names of Soviet and Soviet block history, but not so much those lesser known individuals. This is an excellent way to learn new things and bring some of those figures out of the misty corners of history.

Plus, at least this time it helped me to be prepared and have a question ready to go instead of having to come up with something. My biggest worry is that I'm going to ask something that's either been asked before or is far too easy. I know everyone likes a challenge... as painful as that can be :cheeky: so hoping this one does the trick.

      Good luck!!!!

      Dan

    3. Hi all,

Well, looks like I'm back in the drivers seat again. I'm going to try one this time and hope I can do almost as well as Charles. :P Great job my friend! You kept us all going and I for one have learned about things I never would have otherwise (and no... not leather or boys! :cheeky: ). In fact... I ran into the idea for my next question while searching for this last one.

      Who was I?

I'm was not a Russian but I've been involved with Russians... and in fact was a Bolshevik.

I helped a man of steal in a great way and having done that later helped save me.

I was a writer, playwrite, revolutionary, statesman.

At one point in my career I was involved with youth.

When I died, I died a broken man.

      So the questions are:

      Who was I?

What was my involvement with youth?

Who did I help and how?

How did my helping him help save me later... and from what?

I could be called a founder... name some things I founded or helped to found.

      When did I die?

      Where am I buried?

And a couple of bonus questions:

What expression of mine became the motto of a movement?

      Name one of my plays.

      Good luck to all!

      Dan

    4. Hello & Thanks Gordon,

Do you by chance have any contacts for a visor cap to complete this outfit? I dont know anyone who deals in Bulgarian.

      Thanks,

      Vince

      Hi Vince,

Thought I'd pop in here. I've dealt for years with Boyan Savov (goes by BOU on Ebay). I'll PM you with his site link. He specializes in Bulgarian but does carry some other countries militaria as well. He may either have or could possibly get you what you need but no idea what it would run. As with most such countries militaria Bulgarian has gone up over the last few years... and I believe this is especially the case with WWII items.

      Anyhow hope this helps.

      Dan

    5. Hi Dan,

The video is not showing up... :-(

      Hi Paul,

I just tried it again and made sure... it's still coming up for me. I use Internet Explorer as my browser... don't know if you use a different browser and perhaps that's causing a problem or what.

It's on MSN videos which I pulled up through the www.msn.com news page. It should come up with a page titled:

      What's Hot > Viral Videos > Editor's Picks : 73view

which has multiple videos/pics on the page. If the movie doesn't start there are five pages of those videos... check through them and it should be one of them. But the link definitely does work in IE and I'd hope in most other browsers.

      Hope it works! :unsure::beer:

      Dan

    6. Dan,

It says "The Hungarian Peoples Republic Badges". Congratulations on getting these two sets from Zsolt. There are others out there. There is a another set of the qualification badges that opens from the centre. IE Hinged at both sides and folds into the centre. There is another set with different badges some of which are para badges. Good hunting!

      Regards,

      Gordon

      Hi Gordon,

Many thanks!!!! Wow... two I didn't know about. Can anyone post pics of those? Would love to see them.

Also... just so you know... I haven't forgotten about the Munkasor tunic... won't be too long now. :jumping: These just popped up from nowhere and I simply couldn't pass them up... been waiting since before Vic got his... in fact I shot him the links on those before. :P I'm so happy he was able to get the one he did and I pray he can work out the other one. Gotta keep both sides of the pond in balance.

These are indeed terrific sets by the look of them... course I know they'll be even better in person. Best of luck to everyone us our members who are hunting for these. I think they are well worth having as a part of ones Hungarian collection.

      Dan

    7. Hi Vic,

Hope you don't mind me premiering mine here... will put more detailed pics in another thread of my Hungarian collection. Just worked these out and can't wait till they arrive. :jumping: Many thanks to Zsolt without whom it would not have been possible. And also many thanks to him for being so kind to allow me to use his terrific pics of the sets. Zsolt... you're the greatest!

    8. :jumping:CONGRATULATIONS :jumping:

      Dear Dan,

congratulations to your new victory  .

Your answer is absolutly correct: They found the Czar's gigantic & hughe wine cellars.

Question #164 is now your turn.

      Best regards

      Christian

      Hi Christian,

Many thanks!!!! If it's okay... I'll again pass the next question on to Charles (Hunyadi) if he'd like it. I know he'll come up with a good one. :jumping:

      Dan

    9. New question #163

      Gentlemen,

again a rather easy one, which has to do with the October Revolution.

      Question:

During their storm of the Winter Palace at the 7th of november 1917 the Bolsheviks encountered severe problems in the basement of that palace and they needed 3 days to finish up with them.

What were these problems  ?

      Best regards

      Christian

Okay folks... I'm going to go out on a limb and try for another one. They encountered the wine cellars... and I presume it took them that long to drink their way through it. :P

      Keeping my fingers crossed! :unsure::beer:

      Dan

    10. Don't see why you are saying this...

      Ch.

      Hi Christophe,

I think he meant blame Charles for Ed's getting to come up with another difficult question. :P

And that he has. I for one only know two of them for sure... the rest no idea. And sadly little or no time to research it right now as I'm working three jobs, grabbing sleep when I can and can't wait for this coming Friday and Saturday as I'm off from all three... although I need to go out of town most of the day Friday. Nevertheless I'm hoping to relax a bit and perhaps be able to catch up on things here.

Best of luck to all on this one! Another great job Ed!

      Dan

    11. Not sure a better scan wouldn't be needed to make a scan on this "threshold" item?

      Hi Ed,

I requested and finally got a scan of the reverse sans screwback... don't know if it helps:

It's already gone higher than I'd hoped it would go and still time left. Here's the link in case any other members are intro'd:

      http://cgi.ebay.com/Order-Medal-Combat-Ser...1QQcmdZViewItem

      Item number: 110181033391

And many thanks to both Rick and Ed for being kind enough to give their input. It is deeply appreciated!

      Dan

    12. Glad to see it on the forum and wellcome to the club

      Order of Victory

      Dear Vic,

Many thanks my friend! I've wanted one for soooooo long and I simply could not pass this one up. A friend of ours used to be in the jewelry business and has some stuff left including some loose stones. They think they may have a ruby which will work placed in the star at the top of the Spasky Tower... and perhaps even some small CZ's which would work on the wreath... which would make it look that much more authentic I think. But have to wait till I'm back with the car to go over and find out.

Will let ya'll know how it goes.

Gotta run for now. Everyone have a great weekend!

      Dan
