Acquired a group lot medals and badges in auction to nab a medal I wanted. Third Reich is not my area of collection so I need opinions and value estimates to list this badge and document for sale. The badge was paired with this document. Opinions?

Here is a rare Lion and Sun Order Breast Star. An Austrian made, CF Rothe 1st Class Lion and Sun Breast star. The Rothe made medals are top notch quality and very distinctive.

Victoria Eugénie Julia (1887-1969) nicknamed Ena, Queen of Spain from 1906 to 1931 and wife of King Alfonso XIII, was the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria and the niece of King Edouard VII. Exiled to Rome on april 14th, 1931, she moved to Lausanne where she died in 1969. While first buried in the church of Sacré-Coeur in Ouchy, her mortal remains were further repatriated in 1985 and placed in the Escurial's royal crypt. She was the grandmother of present King Juan Carlos and godmother of Prince Albert of Monaco. The Order of the Precious Crown is exclusively awarded to ladies, from Japan or foreign countries, for meritorious services. The first class is usually conferred to ladies of royal blood or heads of states. As this is a very sparingly awarded order, these insignia are all of great rarity, even the lowest grades. The present star, which can be dated around 1910, was part of the properties of H.M.Victoria Eugenie Julia (1887 - 1969), Queen of Spain from 1906 to 1931 and wife of King Don Alfonso XIII, grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of England and niece of King Edward VII. As the Queen died in 1969 in Lausanne, her royal estate "Vieille Fontaine" was inventoried by Marcel Matthew. This decoration was listed in the inheritance under Inventory Number 7, Décorations section, and estimated 8'000 CHF (1969). The inventory register mentions that it is one of the only 5 existing examples awarded for this grade in the world before 1969. Mutsuhito, 1867-1912. This extraordinary badge, in the shape of a five-pointed gold star, consists of five rows of radiating pearls separated by red and green enamel cherry blossoms; the central medallion shows a golden phoenix on blue enamel surrounded by a double ring of pearls separated by a band of red enamel on which are two bamboo sprays in green enamel. I have been assembling a list of makers of the Lion and Sun Order and find it to be one of the largest list of makers for a single order. All the different makers give this Lion and Sun order a great variation of artistry and make it a joy to collect. If any one has seen other makers of this order not on my list please post info so the list is more complete. Here is an interesting comparison of medallions. I believe that some order makers freely shared parts. First medallion is a Pouteau, 2nd is Chobillon, 3rd is Kretly.

A 3rd Class Lion and Sun order medal by French maker Pouteau. Formally the company was know as Foyolle, Pouteau. Their address was at 180 Galerie de Valois, Palais Royale where many other famous French medal makers were housed over time. The firm was in business until 1911 at this address, until Chobillon took over that address. I have seen the Fayolle-Pouteau name plate on the Dragon of Annam, Portuguese order medals, Spanish order medals, Tunisian Nichan Iftikhar, Order of Danillo as well as many French medals. One more maker that I can add to the list of makers of Persian Lion and Sun Order.

Sad to say I think this has happened many times. Lately I have come across beautiful Halley L&S medals with their medallions replaced with an inferior Persian medallion. Queen Victoria repurposed all the Jewels from her Persian Effigy medal presented to her by The Shah and made a new necklace. Here is an example of Broach transformation of a Lion and Sun medallion.

I think someone replaced the Bertrand lion medallion with a Persian made medallion somewhere in this medals history. The Bertrand enamel paintings were much more refined that the Persian enamel shown. The Auction house stated that this was a Bertrand made medal, so it must have Bertrand hallmark. The original lion medallion was probably repurposed in another piece of jewelry.

A Kretly made Lion and Sun 3rd class medal. Superb workmanship, no maker plaque, but most definetly a Kretly made medal.

" Exceptional Set of the Order of the Sun Aftab of Persia Iran Empire compreising Sash Badge , Silver set with Diamonds brillant cut , and original silk sah , with Breast Star in Silver set with Diamonds brillant cut , in Original Case of Issue . Very fine to excellent Condition , and from the highest Rarity !! This Set belonged to the Wife of French President Sadi Carnot , who was conferred this Order by Nasseredin Shah following his Sate Visit in 1895 ." Another stunning example of this order!

A very unique Russian made 1st class Lion and Sun breast star made in St. Petersburg Russia in the middle 1800's. Great workmanship and the first time I have seen this type of Lion and Sun. Hammered in the Russian Auction for 120,000 Russian Rubles or $3,774 US.

A really nice Russian made Lion and Sun recently posted to emedals site. "A Russian Produced Iranian Order of Lion & Sun - Order of Lion & Sun (Order of Homayoun), a superb late 19th Century Breast Star, of Russian manufacture, in silver, silver gilt, center appliqué enameled, 82mm, rays and the center surround set with 235 white colored imitation/paste stones (reverse of each stone is thin golden foil, as was a custom at the time to give brightness to the stone); also set in between the rays with 28 green imitation/paste; pin on reverse marked BB (Russian uncommon maker), as well with a French import mark (swan), and with another hallmark (probably Russian); reverse cartouche marked BB along with a Russian Imperial silver hallmark; in slightly worn condition, no missing stones, very rare star and very attractive. " For sale at Emedals for $9,750!

This is a beautiful French made Lion and Sun with real diamonds, rubies and emeralds. Currently on the auction block at Bonmans October 8th Auction, Islamic and Indian Art, lot 100. An early piece with the Auction house estimating around 1840. Estimated to auction from $3200-$4800 US. Quite Small size , 3.2 Centimeter (1.25 inches) in diameter. What a beauty! Now this painting of the lion seems vaguely familiar. There are some unmarked lion and sun medals with the same sort of lion looking like the offspring of a brothers and sister. See post #30 and 31. This lion is so different that the earlier lion paintings of Wolfers, which are some of the best looking lion paintings made. Also the maker "Dazeville" of Paris, which seems to have been a merchant, not a maker, has this type of lion which they probably acquired from Wolfers. The only question I have would Wolfers have the German word Silber ( for silver) in usage? The asking price of this medal is ridiculous! Lol!

2nd class breast star made by Dimitri Osipov, 84 St. Petersburg. I like the wreath garland around lion medallion. A very rare breast star.
