Peter, I have been following this thread and was also looking in my WWI material for photos of these "masks" to no avail. On the other hand if I had been a betting man I would have made a small (very small) wager that these were fairly modern remakes or even fantasy items. After reading Bayern's reply I'm happy I didn't waste my money, once again proving, "Wagering bad, collecting good" is the best motto.I also wish this was the first time I was wrong. A few years ago I passed by a really nice supposed British sword at a show thinking there was never such a thing only to find out recently that it was a very rare experimental Pattern. It is so hard knowing everything while I lack so much knowledge. ?

      Regards

I completely agree that when something doesn't look or feel right it's better to pass it on.... unless you believe that the price is so good and/or the item is so good that you can live with finding out it is a copy/reproduction or even a flat out fake. Now granted I do not spend large amounts on collecting as I have two businesses to run and simply can't rationalize large spendings on frivolous" things ;) and so I spend smaller amounts (few hundred here or there) on items that I feel are real or at least worth the money.

    2. I've always found it so interesting how humans want to mark that "they" were in a place... Writing their names and other stuff on walls that have stood for a long time. I can't say I have ever understood it as I do not have the desire to put my name in places thinking that someone later will read it and wonder who I am... I traveled through Africa overland and in Egypt it was so interesting to see that Napoleon's soldiers put graffiti in the pyramids etc... I do understand that some of it might be interesting hundreds of years later but looking at the destruction of berlin and then the soldiers going all out on buildings makes me a little sad how most people will have a really hard time respecting the place they invade/liberate.

    3. And Indonesian fighter receiving The Cross for Courage and Fidelity in 1950 for his service against the Japanese occupation. This cross is the second highest award of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, preceded only by the Military William Order. The cross was awarded to (and is still worn by) natives of the Netherlands East Indies that showed exceptional display of bravery and fidelity. It is the highest award this man could have received.

    4. Maybe I'm missing something or something you intended to include has been left out but if you did mean to ask what  "TNRGW1914-18 Section VII London" stands for it is "the National Roll of the Great War 1914-1918". Otherwise I'm sorry that I misunderstood and posted the obvious.

One of the most sought-after sets of reference books of the First World War is the National Roll of the Great War. The National Publishing Company attempted, shortly after hostilities ceased, to compile a brief biography of as many participants in the War as possible. The vast majority of entries refer to combatants who survived the Great War and the National Roll is often the only source of information available. Fourteen volumes were completed on a regional basis; this index database now allows simple searching of this unique reference source. Original volumes of this work are scarce the only 14 volumes ever published, cover a region, as follows:

      • Section I London W, C and N
      • Section II London W, C and N
      • Section III London W, C and N
      • Section IV Southampton
      • Section V Luton and vicinity (includes other parts of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire)
      • Section VI Birmingham
      • Section VII London W, SE and C
      • Section VIII Leeds
      • Section IX Bradford
      • Section X Portsmouth
      • Section XI Manchester
      • Section XII Bedford and Northampton
      • Section XIII London SE
      • Section XIV Salford

If you needed help from someone who owns the the National Roll of the Great War than I'm also sorry as I do not have it.
