    1. Enough for now! More later.

      Please fill in the holes . . . :jumping::beer:

Why did you start this up again!!! :cheeky:

Just joking, I've been putting this off too!! There are just too many of these!!!

I'll do my best and fill a few gaps, and add a few variations of ones already posted.

      JC

let me start with an R52 (Military Academy) and two NIBs

    2. Not sure what to make of "ER" except that it's unlikely to stand for "Elizabeth Regina" ! More likely it means "Enfield Rifle" or "Enfield R..."?? There are some very good books out there on the Lee Enfield, with all it's marks, though, so if you care you can probably find some more info.

The ER stands for Edward Rex. Edward was king after Vicky. From 1901 'till 1910.

    3. Nice spread on the manufacturers: "Enfield" - British Army arsenal; "Saprbrook" (?, probably a sub-contractor) and London Small Arms Company, one of the bigger sub-contractors.

The "II" with a slash/stroke through it may mean a modification on the basic Mk II, though I would have expected some added mark to "update" the II if that were the case. Was there a Mk IIa, IIb, etc, anyone know?

      You obviously know your stuff!

I had another look at the rifle in question and on the other side of the rifle is a stamp from 1909.

I guess it was updated or fixed?

The marking on the first pic of this rifle reads "sparkbrook".

Thanks to all of you who've helped so far!

      JC

edit: I just had a closer look and the barrel has several "ER" markings so I'm guessing that the barrel was replaced.

    4. I notice that they are all missing the forestock with bayonet lug, and none of then have magazines.

Was this a result of modifications in service, or are they "sporterized"? Here in Canada Canadian Tire used to sell Lee-Enfields with short forestocks, but they kept the magazine.

Wow, I didn't understand half of that!

I'm sorry I'm completely ignorant when it comes to guns.

We bought them like this from a farmer in South Africa who had a barn full of these, I mean dozens and dozens of them. They were all welded shut, with no magazines and they all had a little hole drilled in the barrel.

Would it be possible to buy the missing parts to get them looking like they did back in the day?

Or would it not be worth the trouble?

      JC

    5. Hi there,

I have three Enfields that we bought in South Africa some 20 odd years ago and I've always wondered about them. who used them and so on.

I must confess that their value is also of interest, not for sales purposes, but just so I know.

Anyway here they are so any info would be most appreciated!

Almost forgot they all have the "U" with arrow on them.

      Thanks

      JC

PS. Sorry about the bad first picture.

    6. I was wondering, how many different mint marks are there for Japanese orders and medals.

I know of the "M" mark for Osaka, I think, but how about the rest?

I'm wondering about one that actually looks a little like this " t " in particular.

      Any ideas?

      thanks

      JC

    7. Ed,

Did you notice he raised the price on $11.00, from the previous $48.00 to $59.00?

I also (still) have 3 copies. My own (signed and numbered 087) for daily use, and the other two remaining as part of a stock I had for sale (unsigned and unnumbered). I guess I'll keep one of these on the shelf (to have a mint copy as mine starts showing some wear) and the other one is still available for sale.

      Dolf

I should probably get my self another copy as mine has seen better days too.

It's a shame 'cause it has a nice inscription from Dr.B to my brother and is numbered 45.

$59 is still not bad for the only ref. on my favourite subject!!

    8. Yes, JC, EXACTLY. It is really, really interesting how a totally unknown badge stays unknown until, suddenly, several samples come forth. And NOT from any familiar source (and especially NOT from the Central Bank).

If you wonder where that odd smell comes from, look to this badge.

I wish I were wrong, but when you see it there is little doubt.

I'm actually glad that it's not real. (Sorry usairforce, I hope you didn't pay too much for it)

There are so many great Mongolian items and some really bad ones, but even the bad ones have a certain something. Take P01 for example, crude construction and it looks like a ten year old designed it but I still think it's a great little badge! It's almost cartoonish, but it has character!

This badge just has none of that, it was made to deceive.

usairforce, the other two badges are very nice though.

      JC

last pic of the back, not really needed but that's all of them..

    9. Yes, that fantasy Internal Security badge is the same one that was making the rounds -- and being universallly laughed at -- when I was in Ulanbaatar this summer. It is the first outright fantasy-fake Mongolian item spotted; some fakes are out there, expecially Medal of Unselfishness and some fake foreign Soviet Lenin 100s (though these may be coming out of the former CCCP).

Ed do you remember this one?

It was offered to me for $700 :speechless: , but in the end I didn't end up buying it.

      It just smelled funny!

Here are the pictures I was sent by the seller.

    10. Japan does not but Manchukuo, which was a Japanese vassal state, does. It is called the Border Incident War Medal and was established in 1939 for service in the various clashes on the Amur River in 1937, Changkufeng Hill in July 1938 and Nomohan in 1939. Let me see if I can dig out a photo of it for you.

I guess that's the same as the Nomonhan incident medal??

I know I have better pictures, but these are the only ones I could find!

ps. Almost forgot there are two variations of this medal. The rarer of the two has a larger raven (I think it's a raven) on the front..

I'm not sure which variation this one is but they really do look about the same.
