In this instance the ribbon does not exclusively indicate a specific country or jeweler. While a Rosette on the ribbon mostly indicates a French or Belgium origin, but I have also come across Persian manufactured pieces with rosettes on their ribbons. Also please note that ribbons are highly subject to replacement by dealers.

Sorry for late reply but the reverse image unfortunately does not provide anymore clues. So, most likely Persian manufactured.

It is difficult to say but appears to be Persian manufactured. Need to see an image of the reverse to be certain.

You are very welcome. Indeed the red sash is unusual particularly for the first class. We can see Red sash on lower classes and mostly on the order of arts and sciences.

This is the bestowal document for a first class order of lion and sun with red sash from the reign of Mohammad Ali Shah Qajar (8 January 1907-16 July 1909).
I cannot make out the name of the recipient or the exact bestowal date due fancy script letters used.

You very welcome. The medal itself is also very hard to find and rare.

The literal transliteration from farsi is "Imperial Naval Force". It is a hat from Imperial Iranian Navy.

hmmm good question Mike. I can't think of any! Your theory about medallion coming loose could be the case. Somehow i tend to think that it is more of maker's error. Of course i have no evidence of that. just a gut feeling.

Thanks Mike. The center medallion is firmly in place and does not rotate whatsoever. Also, of course one can definitely tell which side is up and which down by looking at the enamel painting in front.

I recently noticed that the hook and pins on the back of the attached Phalavi order are placed side ways. That is they are not in the same direction vis-a-vie the front of the medal. The pins and the hook of the medal are placed side ways! Would these orders end up as rejects by manufacture - in this case Arthus Bertrand.0

Ditto!! many thanks...
Thanks Mitya & Nick! I never get tired of looking at this fantastic Persian Bling! Really great portraits.

This is the so called bravery medal. Excellent question about the writings on the rim. I have been trying to decipher it for past half an hour but can't quite figure out some of the words. The writing is very cryptic..i will continue to look into it..

Hello Paul,
thank you very much for your help! is the medal rare or not?
kind regards
rene
This one is rare. This is from the last shah of Qajar dynasty - Ahmad Shah. There are many of these medals that were issued during Naserdin and Mozzaferdin shahs and are readily available. There are very few Ahmad shah. Definitely a keeper.

I think this is because they somehow broke original suspension ring and later decided to add this carabiner
oh ok. That could explain it...thank you..

One of palaces at Niavaran Imperial residence complex (now museum) in Tehran. They change the number of items exposed in glass cases there from time to time (don't know why) so just now one cannot see this collar. If it is in a vault there now or somewhere else - I don't know.
Thank you. I noticed that the one posted in irangohar site comes with a suspension hook whereas the one ebay does not. I also saw another one a while back which does not have the hook.

Ahmad Shah, I think. Mohammad Hassan was expelled in 24 hours and I don't think he was allowed to take smth of this kind with him. Reza Shah's collar is at Sahebqaranieh now. Actually, I wish we know some more cavaliers - if they ever existed.
Hi Mitya,
What is Sahebqaranieh means?

Here is a beautiful jeweled Lion and Sun medal currently up for auction on the Bene Merenti Medals Auction. a close up of the front.
I wonder why the sun has no male/female face associated with it!!!! Does the sash looks like a replacement and not an original one?

Hi Jstorm - What you have posted is a mini of Pahlavi era order of Homayoun. This is not a mini of Qajar era order of Elmi. I went back and saw few other photos of order of Homayoun similar to yours in this thread which are also from Pahlavi era.
