What metal is it made out of?

It is not magnetic.I don't want to try and take any paint off it.

OK, well it's not steel, so that lets out an "upgraded" black grade.

Gold should be Nice like this, not Iiiiiiicky.

That is what I have been trying to figure out if it was a black painted

You do get non-magnetic black badges though. Or have I misunderstood something.

Has the badge been treated chemically to give the gold effect instead of painting? Strange about the pebble detail not being there though.

Might be.Looking at it closer I dont think it is painted.Maybe it is brass.

I have seen pictures of other wound badges with low pebble detail

on back

I'm not sure what to make of this one...... the color puts me off, but the pin/hinge/catch look OK. The lack of detail on the reverse doesn't bother me too much....... Imperial Flight Badges (stamped/issue) have almost no detail on the reverse other than the outlines of the leaves, etc..... no pebbling.
