Hi Alexandre,

Ihave B/W picture of Ven?j?nsaari medal. Colours are:side stribes black, then red and blue on the centre I do not know the color of the metal. I visited Ven?j?nsaari two years ago. I am also surprised that there is medal for Patterinm?ki battle. Patterinm?ki is in Viipuri and I was born about half a mile from there.

That battle liberated the town from the reds , but the name for the medal in Finnish is "Helsingin VALTAUKSEN muistomitali" and it means "The commemorative medal of THE CAPTURE of Helsinki".

Huh! I think the residents of the city would have been happy to be liberated but not to think of themselves as being "captured" by their own side. Very weird for Finns not to speak Finnish correctly! Sounds like you guys beat bad American grammar/vocabulary by 40 years!

As a matter of fact they were liberated. Lawfully elected government asked for German help against bolshevik backed reds. People of Helsinki were under unlawful revolutionary government. It is another matter if official name of the medal happens to be something else. I am not sure. I do not want to get involved with political argument. I am sure Mr. Jani Tiainen could help with the correct name. I think You are correct, "Capture" does not sound right.

I am not sure what you guys mean with "speaking Finnish correctly" and so on, but as I wrote earlier the official name is what said. Also, the city was liberated (if you don?t think it from the reds side what we obviously don?t do!), that is a well-known fact at least here in Helsinki.

English translation "liberation" is widely used and it is an usefull name and tells better what happened. But still the fact is that the correct Finnish name for the medal is the capture. My opinion is that we can?t change the official name given in 1918 with how we feels or how it sounds today.

I personally think we were liberated and it was Liberation war, though if you translate the medal's name directly it is for capture of Helsinki - and precisely 20th anniversary of the capture of Helsinki.

Anyway - translations in Mattila's book were made by some English-grammar-enthusiastic with not reasonable knowledge of the context, so some english translations are quite long and difficult - I would say unpractical. However their meaning is mostly correct. Perhaps Finnish language is difficult and complex, but would there be shorter name for e.g. "Heimosotaristi" = "Cross for the veterans of the wars of kindred nations"?

I dont even know if there are "official" translations for the names old Finnish awards, yet translations in Mattila's book are made up when the book was published and hence unofficial.
