paul w Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 I recently obtained this badge and I'm not quite comfortable with it.Its the first time I've held a Tombac Scwerin in hand But it doesn't seem right. At the 3 O'clock position on the wreath at the rear of the badge and to the left rear of the flag on the hull of the u-boat there appears to be cast marks.Any help and opinions appreciated,Cheers,Paul
Gordon Williamson Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Paul,Looks OK. There are two distinctly different die strikings for the Schwerin badge. The type shown here has a slightly "fatter" neck, a "raised" area on the foredeck just ahead of the gun, is usually unmarked and has the flat rather than round wire retaining hook. All textbook correct features for this type of striking.
paul w Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Thanks for the reply Gordon,Its certainly a well made badge other then the small marks on the back.Shame about the eagle though, the Zimmerman style is much nicer to look at.Cheers,Paul
John R Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 (edited) I do not like this badge that much although period. Lack of brow over the eagle's eye, lack of burnished top wings and overal gilt makes this one an average example I think. It does not look cast to me, just very heavily worn or exposed to the elements. John Edited November 20, 2006 by John Robinson
